Dr. David Alan Wyatt, MD

I was recently a patient at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Several months ago, I had a CT Scan of my lungs at the hospital in Wytheville VA, which showed a cancerous tumor in the middle lobe of my right lung. I was then scheduled to have a PET Scan at New River Valley Medical Center, which is owned/managed by Carilion. The scan showed a tumor in the middle lobe of my right lung. I then had a biopsy of the tumor at New River Valley Medical Center. When reporting the results, Dr. Sarah L. Thomas, made a mistake and listed that the tumor was in the upper lobe of the right lung. I was then referred to Dr. David A. Wyatt to discuss having that lobe removed. Day of surgery I was admit to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, and took the operating room. However, before Dr. Wyatt started the surgery, he was contacted by his Nurse Practitioner, Leslie Loving, and told that there was a discrepancy in the reporting. Wytheville was showing the tumor in the middle lobe of the right lung and… Carilion New River Valley Medical Center had mistakenly reported that the tumor was in the upper lobe of the right lung. Dr. Wyatt chose to remove the upper lobe in spite of the discrepancy, without doing any additional scans or discussing this with my family to ensure he was removing the correct lobe, he has admitted to this. A few weeks later he called me to his office and stated he had made a mistake and removed the wrong lobe. He told me that the pathology report showed no tumor nor signs of the lobe being biopsied. He then insisted to immediately take me back to surgery to correct the mistake he had made because the cancer was still in my middle lobe, which I declined. At this point there has been no accountability for the mistakes that was made at New River Valley Medical Center nor Roanoke Memorial Hospital, which are both owned/managed by Carilion. When I sought for a second opinion for treatment, Dr. Wyatt’s office canceled my post operation follow up visit, without notifying me that they were doing so. They listed in my chart that I had stated that I would never come back to see Dr. Wyatt, which is not true, I never made that statement. At this point, Dr. David A. Wyatt and Dr. Sarah L. Thomas are still employed by Carilion and continues to see patients without being held accountable for their gross negligence.

Doctor Wyatt may be a wonderful Cardiothorasic surgeon but tends to go beyond his expertice for his own fulfillment, not taking into consideration what would be better and/or easier for the patient.

Professional Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgeon with compassion. Dr. Wyatt is a fantastic surgeon and is on the cutting edge with his techniques. Knows what patients need to get well again. He and his team take care of their patients. Highly recommend him as a surgeon.
