A member of the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, Dr. Van Ness received her undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Maryland and her medical degree in 1992 from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. She completed an internship and residency in pediatrics at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, where she served as chief resident. Certified by the National Board of Pediatrics, Dr. Van Ness is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children. During her service in the U.S. Navy, Dr. Van Ness received the Navy Achievement Medal for heroic life-saving in a remote hospital and the Humanitarian Service Medal for hurricane relief work in the Caribbean.
