Dr. Dean Alan Abramson, MD

I have been seeing Doc Abramson for 23 years (and have always go along, I even referred friends to him) I recently got diagnosed with an illness that is linked to a medication he had prescribed for my acid reflux. My specialist said to get ahold of him and have him give me something in a different family. I have NEVER been so disrespected by anyone my whole life than I was by his nurse. The first nurses voice I did not reconise as we began to talk, then out of nowhere I hear his nurse jump in on the conversation (she must have been on the same line) She immediately was on the defensive and was telling me it wasn't related and I should wait to truly be diagnosed before I call up and tell them the med they put me on gave me this. I again told her the "yes" it was confirmed (By the Mayo Clinic) that is was positive and I just needed to change the medication they had refilled just two weeks before. She told me that if there was a connection it was probably at the "bottom of the list" I… told her that when you have this it doesn't matter where it's at on the list. I also told her she should have taken 5 min like I did and google the medication and see for herself that it related to what I now have before she called and harassed me with all kinds of questions and accusations and made me feel terrible, at which she agreed and apologized. She requested all my medical records be sent to them. She called me later that day to tell me the Doc said to stop the medication and that I should contact them when I get food stuck in my esophagus. You see I have been seeing him this long because the acid is making my passageway narrow. She said the Doc said I don't have anything wrong with me and that he does not need to see me anymore even though within the last two weeks they added a scope procedure of my esophagus because I am still having problems and they wanted to check it again. So they are either giving patients unneeded medications and procedures or he just doesn't want to treat me anymore, which is fine but Doc Abramson you need to man up and tell the truth instead of lying about my health. SHAME on you and your nurse!!!! I am not sure what is happening over there with you guys but you should not be treating anyone anymore.

‘Dr’ Abramson was the worst ever! He was rude, didn’t seem to know what he was doing (obviously) as when he took a pic of my gall bladder, he didn’t realize I had a birth defect that my liver surrounded it, so he cut it when he tried to remove the gall bladder, which made me lose lots of blood. I spent hours of his idiot nurses poking n prodding me to do trans usurious all dog gone day and night; then he bc my fever wouldn’t go away, it was discovered he left a sponge in me, so, yep, another procedure etc - a 1 day procedure kept me hospitalized for 10 Days! If you hear his name as a referral .... RUN! BTW, my Dr scheduled me with him in December! Hello?! I’m CLEARLY NOT GOING!!!!!

In trying to make an appointment there is only one person who schedules everything. She seems to always be out of the office and there is a message saying to leave your information so she can call back, but never does. EXTREMELY frustrating that there is nobody else to talk to about this and a distinct lack of communication. The ratings I left have nothing to do with the doctor and everything to do with simply trying to see him.

Did not have good 1st appt but gave him a 2nd chance. He did not listen to me when I explained how my symptoms changed since prior diagnosis. He insisted my infection was still present and would not accept that I disagreed. He ordered more tests and as no surprise to me the infection was gone. His answer was to get a 2nd invasive colonoscopy. The lady that took my vitals was rude and acted like I was a burden. Neither had any bedside manners. Scheduling would not let me switch dr's per their office rule not to allow this. I complained to my primary care office and they told me that people either love him or hate him and there is no in-between. They also confirmed that his office would not change dr's for a patient even at their request and this is the only office in town so I'm driving to Iowa City now. I felt like a number there and was rushed through the entire appt. dr said he was going to check on something, left the room, and I never saw him again. He sent his nurse in to give me… my lab orders and that abruptly ended my appt even though I had additional questions and concerns. 2nd appointment took me 3 months to get in even though I was an established patient. Left message on his nurse's private line to schedule colonoscopy and she never called me back. That was the last straw. Worst experience at dr office ever.

This practice has a reputation for seeing as many patients as they can in a short period of time. They are also the only practice of their kind in town and do not allow patients to switch doctors after being assigned to someone. Does that tell you something?My experience with Dr. Abramson was nothing but all around horrible. He never treated my concerns and did not seem interested in me as a patient. Every time I saw him I brought up several questions/concerns. He would act like he was going to come back with samples or a prescription, bolt out of the room to never return and would send a nurse in his place. NOT HELPFUL. After waiting for several weeks for an appointment, there is nothing worse than being ignored when you finally get there.He may have a reputation for being a fine surgeon but that doesn't help those who come to him with needs other than surgery.

Very rude to patients!!! he turned me away after being refered to him by my doctor. He said that my Doc sent me to the wrong place and it didnt sound like my symptoms were within his practice. The funny thing is my problems were acid reflux, h-pylori bacteria also in my stomach. But this is pretty common from people in the medical field these days.

I waited a month for this appointment-- once there, Dr. Abramson gave me about 7 minutes of his time, left room to write a prescription and talk to nurse, never came back-- even though I had more questions. Didn't seem to listen to all I had to say.
