Dr. Deane Shore Berson, MD

I worked with Dr. Berson for about a year after experiencing a workplace trauma that triggered other past issues to arise. He was very supportive and held me accountable for myself and taking action to improve. He is not fluff - so if you want to get better and are willing to do the work he will help you. It is not easy to do the work but you have to do it and he will be there to help. I really appreciate that he is about teaching skills vs. just prescribing meds and sending you on your way.

I went to Dr Berson because unlike most psychiatrists, he's focused on root causes and true healing and growth. If you just want drugs, go to almost anyone else. Dr Berson spent the time necessary to help me surface and address some deep issues and thus alleviate the need for my meds.

Dr. Berson is a very petty doctor. If you have to cancel, make sure you do it in 24 hours. He sent me to a collection because I didn't give him 24 hours notice. I gave him 21 hours, but he is so trivial that he had to send me to a collection agency. He was also not a very friendly doctor. I didn't find him helpful either. The servicese were for my daughter and she didn't feel comfortable with him at all.

Dr. B rates highest on all scales for being devoted and caring to his patients. He also showed me ability to cure the deepest of depression, which unfortunately can take a lot of time, effort and expense to do well and without long term reliance on medication. He can sometimes be focussed on his own methodology more than a suffering person can understand, but in the end it works. He will remain committed to you if you are willing to do the work and really want to be well.

While not every shrink is perfect, this doctor really cares, and works very hard to make sure the patient is safe and well cared for... and he is intelligent enough to know when to refer a patient to different care; given that mental health patients are not in the best shape to begin with, reading an online review should be taken with a dose of common sense. That said, I'd have to say that if a person does not feel right about a person from whom they may accept care, by all means ask for a referral. A good doctor will cheerfully offer that, which Dr. B had also done for me for related issues.

The office location, a run-down strip mall, was offputting (at best) but I was desperate for help. Berson's office was decorated in old furniture and stuffed animals which he said were for kids. During the session, as I cried, Berson kept telling me to stop feeling sorry for myself. He was condescending and patronizing during the session. At the end of the session he told me that if I couldn't calm down, he could help me get admitted to the hospital. I left feeling more hopeless and distraught than when I went in. Avoid this "doctor" like the plague. Fortunately I later found a caring doctor who helped me cope with my depression.
