He attended Cal State University in Fullerton for his undergraduate studies and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice. He continued his education by earning a master’s in Social Service Administration from the University of Chicago. Prior to becoming a physician assistant, Derek served as a social worker for twelve years. He graduated with a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California.
