Dr. Derek Joseph Schmidt, MD

Not recommend for thyroid surgery. My parathyroids stop working. Two were damaged and two were removed by accident.

I feel very fortunate to have had a meaningful, exceptional appointment with Derek Schmidt, an accomplished, superb and personable, MD. Most assuredly, he is an inspiration. Merci, Derek Schmidt, for all you do.

Dr. Schmidt really reflects on each patient's condition and takes the time to get to know each patient. Great doctor.

I was referred to Dr. Schmidt by my endocrinologist when I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. His profile at Healthpartners states that he may seem to be laidback during the visit, but that he is taking copious notes and listening. I found that to be true. We had a good time joking and laughing during the exam, but when it came down to discussing my options and explaining the treatment options, he was nothing but business and professionalism. He even provided paper and a pencil so that I could take notes. My surgery was difficult due to underlying conditions, but Dr. Kodl managed to remove my thyroid and save the parathyroid glands in the process. The scar is so tiny that most people don't even notice it. He even came in to the hospital on his off day to check on me, which blew me away. He also popped in during my follow-up endocrinologist visit. I compare this to my spine surgeon, who I saw before surgery and didn't hear from again. Dr. Schmidt is a wonderful combination… of personality and professionalism and also possesses solid surgery skills. I have had a nurse and a former high school classmate praise him highly. Surgeons are generally not very personable and seem to shy from personal contact, but Dr. Schmidt was refreshingly different. He listens and actually cares about his patients. I highly recommend him. And he's cute!

He is very direct and holds nothing back, but took all the time I needed and answered all of my questions without feeling rushed. Great sense of humor - and cute!
