 I’m Derek Terrell, PMHNP-BC and I specialize in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions affecting clients of all ages. I want to begin by congratulating you on taking the brave first step in addressing your mental health needs.  It’s not easy.  Like many patients who are also attempting to decide on who to choose as a mental health provider, you may encounter lists of hundreds, if not thousands of potential psychiatrists out there, and wonder to yourself, how the heck do I decide?  Many psychiatrists boast about having a Harvard education and some collection of certifications that the average person has no idea of what these are, or how they actually affect their treatment.  What makes me different from the rest, is that I bring a wealth of real-world experience that my competitors simply lack.

I use a warm and relatable approach to create collaborative partnerships with my patients, so that psychiatric concerns can be addressed from a shared …perspective. I place a strong emphasis on psychoeducation by helping clients to understand their diagnoses and treatment options, so that they can make informed decisions about their health needs. I specialize in treating those who have experienced trauma, struggle in social situations, or have a history of substance use.  My practice is rooted in a blend of supportive, client-centered, and insight-oriented therapy, ensuring a holistic approach tailored to your individual needs. Our appointments will never feel rushed. I strive to work with clients to explore their emotions, understand their experiences, and develop practical strategies for managing their mental health needs.

 During your intake, I will work with you to develop a comprehensive treatment plan. If medication is started, you can always expect to understand the reason medication was started and potential side effects. In therapy sessions, you can expect to feel validated and supported but also gain tools and strategies to put into action in between visits.
