What is a dermatologist?

Most people think of dermatologists as doctors who specialize in skin problems. Though that's true, a dermatologist’s expertise typically goes beyond the skin and includes issues related to the hair, nails and mucus membranes beneath the skin.

Among dermatologists, there are also subspecialties. For example, a surgical dermatologist focuses on treating your skin, nail and hair problems with surgical procedures. Cosmetic dermatologists treat problems in order to improve your appearance. There are also dermatopathologists, who focus on microscopic diagnosis of problems related to the skin. Pediatric dermatologists treat children.
