Dr. Donald Mark Kastenbaum, MD

Doc Kastenbaum fixed my meniscus several years ago. Operation was fine but office visits were always 2-3 hours with most of it waiting. And when I mentioned the unacceptably long wait the good doc went off on me telling me "Well I'm a doctor blah blah blah." This was when he was on Union Square so perhaps he doesn't overschedule in his current space.

I had a hip replacement with Dr. Kastenbaum and have been in pain ever since surgery. Every time I would go for follow up and told him i still had pain he dismissed me and said the X-ray looked fine. My physical therapist said he had never seen such a severe difference in leg length. He was also was concerned I wasn't having improvement although doing all the PT and tried contacting Dr. kastenbaum but he never responded after several attempts so we gave up. Dr. Kastenbaum is rude, condescending and could care less about you once you leave the hospital. He also put the unnecessary hardware in me that another review described and I had that surgically removed by anothet doctor at the best orthopedic hospital HSS and I've improved greatly. My doctor at HSS could not understand why he even put the stupid thing in me, very very old technique is what he said. Dr. Kastenbaum is horrible and I wouldn't recommend him to my worst enemy. If you need a hip or knee replacement don't use him, go to… HSS where the best and younger doctors are who are up to date with surgical methods. I've improved thanks to follow up surgery at HSS to fix what Kastenbaum did but to this day my hip is still not right and never will be without getting another replacement Kastenbaum has ruined my quality of life forever.

I don't usually write reviews but i am in the process of planning to have a knee replacement and i looked up Dr K who did my hip replacement in 2007. Never would i have believed that anyone would give him a bad rating because he was the perfect surgeon. He did a great job and he showed how much he cared. He PA Peter, I believe his name is was just as amazing. I hope to get him for my knee replacement. It's really funny how people can have totally different experiences with the same doctor. This is why it is a blessing to have a choice in your medical providers.

surgery didnt help, still in pain to this day and now in the process of finding a new doctor. staff was horrible and scheduling the surgery was a big mess. after all that wait in getting the surgery due to their scheduling and handling my insurance mistakes, I am disappointed and wish I never went through all the headaches and pain waiting to get the surgery done. my advice to all is get a second opinion and do your research on the doctors. Had I seen the reviews on Dr. Kastenbaum before getting the surgery I would have gone to another Dr. Sigh!

I had two knee replacement and I am happy.

He may be a wonderful surgeon but there is more to good care than a perfect incision. He needs to value his patients beyond the OR. I found him patronizing, insulting, divaish and self-involved. He made me feel bad about my pain as if it was a reflection on him!

Dr. Kastenbaum is cordial and attentive as is his PA. Lots of information is provided. I specifically was looking for the anterior approach so was directed to him by my health insurance carrier. It turned out he prefers the lateral aproach and told me the healing is approximately the same. I wanted the anterior approach nonetheless and because I qualify for this approach I did not meet with Dr. Kastenbaum again. However he was extremely helpful in alerting me to potential alergic reactions causing a general feeling of unwellness post surgery. He arranged an appointment with a dermatologist to ensure I would not have any concerns post surgery.

Dr. Kastenbaum did a total knee replacement for me. My recovery was exactly as long and as painful as I was told that it would be by him. He believes that the medical professionals and patient act as a team. This means that the patient has to do his part. My recovery and current condition, almost 2 years post-op, are amazingly gratifying and I have no limits on what I can do or pain in doing it. My once crooked leg is now straight and true.
