Dr. Donald Jay Meyer, MD

Claims to listen but does not give any credence to responses that question his previous assumptions.

Had a very bad experience with this MD. He was very irresponsible in managing medication. Suffered greatly.

Appears competent but made a major error in my medication which caused some very severe symptoms. It has been almost 3 months and I am still recovering. He also provided insufficient follow-up/monitoring. Bottom line: I can't trust him with my mental health. I don't recommend him.

Excellent Doctor and little wait time.

Misuse of Voice Mail. Dr. Meyer, who I just found out has 33 years of experience and probably somewhere in his 60's doesn't yet know the proper use of voice mail for a doctor. REALLY??? Or is it perhaps he's a doctor who has no concern for proper patient care -- After waiting over 3 days for a response from him-- impossible to get thru to him in person, he left a rather strange ---"thanks for thinking of me" but I'm not taking new patients" in a rather sarcastic mocking tone. I will be giving feedback to the doc who referred me to him, suggesting to them they may think twice before referring patients to him and since he is a staff doc at the same hospital (BIDMC) I will be calling with a complaint about his improper behavior. (Everyone has a boss including him) Hospital staff docs represent that hospital and BIDMC has a right to know when staff doesn't reflect well on their mission as an institution. I'd strongly recommend Mass General Hospital to anyone in the Boston area. … What a difference in response. It seems that the more qualified (med schools and training) the more responsive, caring and patient centered docs are. BIDMC is off my list of hospitals and so is Dr. Meyer.

I was in treatment with Dr. Meyer for one and a half years for depression and adjustment issues relating to changes in family role, job, and relationship status. He was outstanding and truly helped me. I had sought therapy with several other practitioners (psychiatrists & psychologists) without success: the psychologists I saw basically held my hand and validated my feelings, which was nice but not actually helpful. The other psychiatrist I saw was purely medication-focused and discounted subjective feelings and real-world experiences. Dr. Meyer, by contrast, was an intelligent and sympathetic yet challenging listener, who could point out negative patterns and make connections that I had not been able to see/make for myself. He also added medication judiciously, but didn't use it as the silver bullet for all aspects of the psyche. I completely disagree with the other reviewer that Dr. M isn't a good practitioner for female patients, though I recognize that "fit" with a therapist -… like whether you "get" someone's sense of humor - is very individual.

Difficult to speak with. He doesn't show interest in what I say. I will not return and do not recommend him.

Very difficult with scheduling, seems to place higher priority on his various consulting businesses, and patient care treated like an afterthought. He is not very insightful nor frankly seemingly interested in being helpful.
