Dr. Donald Everett Schmechel, MD

I went to Dr Schmechel’s office for possible Peripheral Nueropathy three times. It was a bizarre experience. The doctor enthusiastically promised he could help me resolve my pain. Nerve testing was done by an unlicensed technician. Extensive blood work done at his direction resulting in rejection from Medicare as “medically unnecessary.” It was obvious that the doctor had not even read the lab reports.I had to pay over $300 for the lab work. Calls to his office were not returned. The office is extremely unprofessional and frankly weird. I would not go to this doctor.

Dr. Schmeichel has been so good for me. I was losing my eyesight and his treatment has kept me from going totally blind.

Straight up lied to my parents and I about my Mom's diagnosis. Said she did not have Alzheimer. Had a sleep study done on her, the sleep study doctor informed us that she has Parkinson's. Never heard this from Dr. Schmechel. My parents decide to move to get better care. Couldn't ever get an appointment that wasn't 6+ months away. The new doctor received my Mom's file and the very first visit Dr. Schmechel diagnosed her with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. It is awful and mean to keep the family in the dark. Shame.

My daughter (Cathy) and I both saw Dr Schmechel while he was practicing in the Duke Memory Disorder division of Duke. He was always exceptionally thorough and his communications skills far surpass the norm among doctors. He made us both feel equally at ease with his care, diagnosis. and follow-up. I have referred him to others with similar health issues over the years and surely would be in touch with him again should any type of neurological issues surface within my family.

Dr.Schmechel is the most personable,knowledgable, thorough and compassionate Doctor my husband has seen for his dementia. We are so pleased with the amount of time he spends with us and the way he honestly answers all of our questions. We feel very fortunate.

He is really sincere in helping you to get better without just sticking you on another drug and sending you on your way!

Overall experience was excellent when I went to him in Durham. Trying now to locate him so can refer a close friend.

A very knowledgeable and capable neurologist who quickly diagnosed aspects of my complex medical condition that other neurologists treating me had missed. I am very please with Dr. Schmechel's ability to provide excellent care that I can't seem to get from other doctors. His staff is also excellent!
