Dr. Doug Alan Monteith, MD

Zero stars if I could. His billing practices were criminal, in my opinion, and have had a lingering negative impact on my family well past the last appointment. Stay far far away!

Just terrible. Talked to me for barely five minutes before writing me a prescription, and when I asked him about possible side effects, he told me to ask the pharmacist and shuffled me out the door to make way for the next patient. Talked to the pharmacist, and sure enough, what he prescribed me is not only a medication to treat something other than what I had, it's known to react badly with my brand of birth control, which I'd told him I was on. Clearly doesn't care about his patients.

Wretched. I went to his office to confirm an initial diagnosis on a fairly moderate case of depression, and within five minutes he told me I had something else entirely, wrote me a prescription, and told me to leave. When I tried to ask him about possible side effects, he shoved me out the door with a "Well, the pharmacist will explain it." Asked the pharmacist. It turns out the medicine he prescribed is known to react badly with the birth control I take, which I've been on for four years, and which was in my medical file. The dose he prescribed me was also far higher than the medicine should be started at. I went to a different psychiatrist. Yep, mild to moderate depression, and a completely different medication at a far lighter dosage. I wouldn't go back to Dr. Monteith for any reason.

He was very cold, disinterested, and could care less about what was really going on with me. He just asked questions straight off his intake and appeared irritated at any elaboration of my answers. He also tried to push a medication on me that I knew was ineffective from experience, and he became annoyed that I was advocating for myself. I have never felt so dehumanized. There are better doctors out there, don't waste your time on him.

Dr. Monteith is one of the worst doctors I've ever dealt with. He is late for appointments, and has such a cold, impersonal manner, it's amazing to me that he chose to go into the field of psychiatry in the first place. During your appointment, he will sit behind his desk in front of his laptop and type down your answers to his questions. I was completely taken aback by this practice. He barely makes eye contact during this process, and seems both disinterested in you as a person/patient and in a hurry to push you out the door. That is not the kind of behavior I expect from a medical professional, let alone one who specializes in psychiatry.It also took multiple phone calls and nearly a week to get a refill of my medication in between appointments. The first time I called I specifically told his receptionist that I was running out of my medication and needed a refill within the next couple of days. After nearly a week passed with no word from my pharmacy about the refill (at this point… I was completely out of my medication and feeling ill from withdrawal), I called his office again and reiterated the seriousness of the situation. I have never had a doctor who essentially blew off my request for a medication refill, especially after I let him or her know that I was out of the medication. I will never go back to this doctor for another appointment, and have begun the process of finding a new doctor. I would never recommend him to anyone, and quite frankly I'm so fired up about his lack of professionalism that I am considering writing a letter to Swedish Covenant (something I have never done in my life).

If he knew his PRI he would have seen that the drug meant to control my mania was actually increasing it. But becauser he has such a chip on his shoulder all he cares about is his own ego. This psych is useless and dangerous to see. the drug he gave me made me manic at the 200 mg dose, and if he had bothered to read his pri he would have seen that the patient must be taken off the drug immediately. An ignorant, arrogant pup of a shrink.
