Dr. Douglas Mark Bickers, MD

My husband was fortunate to have Dr. Bickers as a doctor when he was a patient at New Albany Baptist Health when he went in to the ER with afib. Since this was his first heart experience and had never had a cardiologist, Dr. Bickers was wonderful in taking the time to explain to my husband what happened, what was happening now to treat it, and what he needed to do when he got home as follow-up. He did not rush in and out while he was there, making my husband feel like he was just a number, even though it was 10 p.m. before he could get to him the first day. My husband is home now and doing well and we are trying to find a cardiologist at home half as good as Dr. Bickers. Thank you for your excellent care Dr. B.....you are one of a kind.

Dr. Bickers cared for my mother and more recently, my husband. My husband and I appreciated that he spoke to us respectfully. He was very direct with my husband about his family history and his history of smoking. He visited my husband every day while he was in hospital and explained the importance of doing his breathing treatments, etc. to fully recover. If you want someone who will hold your hand and sweetly tell you how things are, Dr. Bickers is not for you. He is truthful and honest with his patients, something we admired in such a serious situation.

I came into the office due to chest pains on my left side consistently for a month. when the physician came into the exam room he stated, “You don’t have congenital heart disease, do you smoke? Do you do crack?” I responded with “No.” So then he said “Well then you don’t have a heart problem, so what bring you here today?” I began to explain my chest pains but he did not lef me even finish a sentence without speaking over me. He was arrogant, he was rude, basically told me I was a hypochondriac since I am in school for nursing, blaming my chest pains on me “thinking I’m experiencing what I’m learning about”. He asked me how I found him, and I told him online. He said, “What, was I the first one that came up in alphabetical order or what?” I told home, “Well you sure sound like you don’t want new patients” and his response was that, “I’m so old and have so many he could take them or leave them.” My mother died of heart failure at 45, 3 years ago which I told him that was why I was there… as I had never been evaluated for cardiac issues in the 29 years I’ve been alive. I left feeling completely belittled and like that was a total waste of my timeand money. Now because I don’t feel that I was even heard about what was going on, I feel I need to see another cardiologist as my concerns were not even heard. I was tempted to tell him to not bill me then if he was not concerned with “new patients”. When I left, crying by the way, and I told people I had seen Dr. Bickers, their responses were, “oh god, I could have told you to go to anyone but him!” This needs to be addressed immediately. There was a short blonde nurse in the room for all of this as I was just waiting for her to come to my rescue, but never a word. I will not be back. I will also tell anyone I care about or don’t even care about to run from this man.

He reminds me of my Dad. Has a sense of humor I relate to. Very direct which I also like. Compassionate. ??

Dr. Bickers was my Mom's cardiologist and his obvious compassion and direct discussion of her condition and prognosis was perfect for a man of my temperment. The surgery was a success and she lived comfortably until other illnesses resulted in her death. On my recent visit to Dr. Bicker's office, he spoke of Mom and remembered her well. He has already had a mojor impact on my blood pressure and has encouraged me throught the weight loss and blood pressure monitoring process thus far. I cannot imagine experiencing this level of comfort and confidence in a different doctor. I certainly hope that he outlives me!
