Dr. Douglas Alan Liening, MD

Dr. Liening took the time to listen to and respond to my concerns. He recommended a non-invasive treatment that really helped. I was nervous going in because I've had other doctors take a very aggressive (and expensive) approach in the past, but I very much appreciate that he listened to me and worked to find a solution that I would be comfortable with. I would highly recommend this doctor!

I went to him several years ago and he operated on took half of my thyroid out , while doing this he cut a nerve and paralyzed my right vocal chord. He tried 2 more surgeries one where he injected a substance to see if that would help and then he did vocal chord implant. Still no voice and said he could do no more. I went to another throat in Chattanooga who told me to have Dr. Liening refer me to Vanderbilt which I did go back and ask him to refer me. long Story short I have had to have a total of 11 surgeries due to this mans incompetence. Beware about going to him.

Walked in and immediately felt rushed and like he didn't want to be there. They had to call him back to the room because he ran out so fast he didn't examine one of the reasons for my visit. Ordered 2 very expensive tests then tried to say I needed surgery. Still haven't discussed my main reason for my visit.

Not Friendly at all. And not listening to Patient to understand the problem. He will star tdoing procedure after hearing fews words from Patient. I strongly will not recommend any of my friends.

He was thorough in reviewing my complaint and did not jump to perform surgery first thing but took a moderate approach. Prescribed generic medications first when those were effective and appropriate which I appreciated. When it became apparent surgery would be necessary, he accommodated my choice of hospital. He followed up with a letter to my family practice doctor outlining my treatment. I felt his approach was very focused on me what was best for me as a patient.

First of all, he has no bed side matter at all. He is difficult to connect with and dont even count on establishing a professional relationship with him because all he sees is money, in my opinion. He will find anyway to bill you for charges. His office, including him, will not bring it to your attention that certain services you receive are a separate charge. So if you do go to this office, especially with Dr. Liening, make sure every step of the way you ask if you will be charged for what you are receiving. This has happened to not only myself but other friends as well that have seen him. Be aware!!!

I live in TN for school, and got fairly sick with some bad sore throats. I was referred to Dr. Leining by an urgent care in the area since I was not getting better with their treatments. Over the course of three different visits over a span of 2 months, I continued to come in with severe tonsillitis, to the point that I couldn't breathe, talk, and kept having to get steroid shots just to function. He kept telling me the tonsils were not abscessed, and that antibiotics would clear it up. After prescribing the strongest and most expensive antibiotics 3 different times and the tonsillitis coming back worse each time, I finally decided to go back home to my doctor in MI. When he looked in my throat, he put me in an emergency tonsillectomy the next morning at 4am because the tonsils were so abscessed that it had started spreading into my brain. Dr. Leining missed this on numerous occasions and I nearly died from his misdiagnosis. DO NOT see this doctor, as he is inadequate in his diagnosis,… as well as unfriendly and rude to his patients.

Wrong diagnosis. Said that I had Meneires Disease. Went to Vanderbilt and did not have it.

Condesending attitude, rude and ordered a test unrelated to my symptoms and when it came back normal, said I WAS OK - suggesting nothing was wrong and I'm still ill, and have to find another dr. Wasted time and money.

He is a great doctor who really does care and does not do surgery unless he really thinks you need it. He started treating my daughter at the age of one and was very kind and gentle with her. He removed tonsils adnoids, and put tubes in her ears during the few years we saw him. He also help with my daughter severe sinus problems and he found out that she had a igg difficency. He is wonderful man and we were sad to lose him as a physician after we moved.
