Dr. Douglas Wright graduated from the University of Maryland Pharmacy School in 1981. He entered Dental School at the University of Maryland receiving his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1985. While at the University of Maryland, Dr. Wright did externship training at Johns Hopkins Hospital, at the Baltimore Cancer Research Center and the University of Maryland Hospital.
After Dental School, Dr. Wright joined the US Navy where he received training in New Port Rhode Island prior to reporting for duty at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. While in San Diego, Dr. Wright received advanced training in oral diagnosis, periodontics (gum disease), endodontics (root canals), and oral surgery.
In 1987, Dr. Wright reported to the USS Trenton for duty at sea. While assigned to the USS Trenton, Dr. Wright received advanced training in anesthesia, Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Advanced Traumatic Life Support. While aboard the USS Trenton, the ship was deployed to …the Middle East for 6 months.
Dr. Wright's military decorations include two Navy Commendation Medals, two Navy Achievement Medals, Combat Action Ribbon and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.
After 4 years of active duty in the Navy, Dr. Wright left active duty to start a dental practice in Maryland. He remained in the Navy Reserve for 17 years. While a reservist, Dr. Wright provided care at Bethesda Naval Hospital.
Following 10 years of practice in Maryland, Dr. Wright accepted a position at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Washington DC. In addition to seeing dental patients at the VA Medical Center, Dr. Wright served on the Infection Control Committee for the hospital. Along with these duties, Dr. Wright was a member of the Medical Center's Chemical and Biological Decontamination team.
Dr. Wright has published articles in the Journal of the Academy of General Dentistry and Proceedings of the Naval Institute.
Dr. Wright moved to Harrisonburg, Virginia in November 2002. He lives in Harrisonburg with his wife, Karen and children: Nicholas, Julia and Rosemary.
