Dr. Anthony Maffei, MD

I would highly recommend Dr. Maffei to any patient out there who is interested in having SmartLipo. Besides having impeccable surgical skills, his bedside manner is fantastic. Dr. Maffei performed SmartLipo on my abdomen -during the procedure you stay awake (which I was nervous about), but from start to finish he talked me through it, making jokes and putting me at ease- the procedure didn't hurt one bit. During my recovery he reached out to me everyday to check on how I was doing. I've had procedures done at other offices where the nurse will call to followup - but never the doctor. I really felt well taken care of and I appreciate a surgeon going above and beyond to do right by their patients . He is thorough, kind, talented and especially passionate about his work. He is wonderfully caring and truly enjoys helping his patients achieve their cosmetic goals. I'm so happy I chose him as my surgeon! Thanks Dr. Maffei - you truly are the best of the best!!

Great surgeon and really cares about his patients

After 2 and a half months of pain, sometimes severe, I decided my wife was right and it was time to see a doctor. Of course it was days before Christmas and the timing couldn't be worse. My wife being in the medical field knew I needed surgery. I was soon diagnosed, after a cat scan with an inguinal hernia. Dr. Anthony Maffei came highly recommended by several doctors my wife spoke with. Dr. Maffei laparoscopically repaired my hernia and the pain is gone! Back to work in 3 days. Amazing job!

First off, I’ve never responded to a patient review before nor do I patrol these review boards. One of my patients made me aware of this negative review below and I feel obligated to respond. I’m not aware of who this patient is, however I’m sorry your experience with me was portrayed as negative. Please keep in mind that roughly 30% of my practice involves complex revisional bariatric surgery most of which is removal of band and conversion to sleeve or bypass. My team and myself are extremely well versed in this arena and regularly manage some of the most challenging and complex patients in the tri-state area (as well as take on many patients whom which other surgeons are not comfortable dealing with) engage all levels of obesity, standards of care for weight loss operations, ages, comorbid conditions, and reoperations. I’ve also been named as a 2018 TOP Doctor by Castle Connolly/Westchester Magazine and am always dedicated to providing the highest level of patient care every step of… the way. With that being said, I’d like to respond/clarify how I a regularly treat patients such as yourself as I wasn’t your original surgeon and am sorry you didn’t have the results you were expecting with your band. First off, yes my preference is to always empty patient’s bands in anticipation of a revision as typically when a band has been in for several years many patients tend to develop what is known as a megaesopahagus (i.e. you’re swallowing tube dilates from the width of a hotdog to sometimes as large as a football) thus making it not function well and act as a food storage reservoir/new stomach which it’s not supposed to do. By emptying the band before revision surgery, this usually lets it shrink down to a normal caliber and act more as a passage way for food as opposed to a new stomach, thus giving it a “rest” before a new procedure is performed. With the appropriate counseling, my experience has been that most patient’s do not gain significant weight during this waiting period as they’re now able to once again eat healthy protein without experiencing dysphagia symptoms as opposed to high calorie liquids and carbs which they were only able to get down when band was too tight. In regards to your “port” which is supposed to sit flat on your abdominal wall being tilted, that has NOTHING to do with slippage (which is when the “band”, not port, itself slides down your stomach organ choking it). I adamantly stand by the approach I described above and am happy to admit here publicly that to date, I’ve never had a sleeve or bypass leak using this approach nor have I ever had a death which I’ll take over a patient gaining some weight before a procedure any day! Leaks are a BIG DEAL! Nevertheless, I go on and on, but only so much space limited here. I’m glad you’re happy with your new surgeon and wish you all the best on your weight loss journey.

I hope I have enough room to fully explain my initial consultation appointment with this guy. First off he is very arrogant, but I didn't mind the arrogance. I informed Dr. Maffei that 10 years ago I had the lapband procedure done and I felt I needed the gastric sleeve done to help me to continue to loose weight. The lapband helped me loose a lot of weight in the beginning and helped me maintain my weight but wasn't enough. Two family members had the gastric sleeve done and had amazing results. My problem with this doctor is this, upon me telling him I had a lapband in me, the consultation shifted gears from me having the gastric sleeve to gastric bypass. The reason according to this doctor, is that there is scar tissue around my stomach area and the sleeve would not be possible. Ok, I was fine with that news and let him continue with the consultation. This is where the consultation went horribly wrong-he INSISTED that he remove the ALL the fluid from my lapband, so that by doing that… he would be opening the band and that would relax the scar tissue around my stomach area and ultimately allow him to do any procedure-sleeve or bypass. He wasn't even sure what procedure he would be able to do until they had me on the table and went inside of me! I asked him before allowing him to remove the fluid-"If you open up my band will I gain back weight?" In his arrogance he said "No, the band is useless" I then went on to mention I was afraid my appetite would return and would be hungry all the time (like I was before I got the band). Once again this arrogant jerk of a doctor who thinks he is amazing went on to mention how I would be fine and even mention how he never "lost a patient on the table". I wasn't concerned about dying on the operation table, I was worried about gaining weight if my lapband was opened and with months before my procedure and no tentative date, he did not consider my fears, instead he said there would be no surgery unless he opened the band up THAT DAY. I went to the other room and allowed this "doctor" to remove the fluid from my band. While I was laying flat on the table he mentioned how difficult it was to get to the port for the band. I informed him that the surgeon who put in the band did it at an angle to prevent slippage. Dr. Maffei's response sarcastically was "oh when were you going to tell me this". The fluid was removed and less than an hour after leaving that office my worst fear happened-my hunger returned-with a vengeance. I tried to watch my weight even with this band opened but the pounds came back-QUICKLY. My clothes no longer fit comfortably and I had to buy bigger clothes (5x). I was a 3x when I went to see Dr. Maffei. I went back to my regular doctor a month later and told him what happened. He mention that even with scar tissue around the stomach area the baratric surgeons can still do a sleeve or bypass depending on the amount of scar tissue. I was furious, the damage was done. I went to the support groups in Greenwich hospital and a lady there mentioned how she had her band was opened up ONE MONTH before her procedure. Thankful another surgeon in the same office tightened my band and will be my new surgeon. As of me writing this, I am 2-3 months away from my procedure and I am the heaviest I have ever been. I regret the day I ever met Dr. Maffei, I was fine before I met him. Do yourself a favor and avoid this arrogant jerk-see anyone else in the same office as him-just not him-especially if you have a lapband.

Dr. Maffei is the most amazing, knowledgeable and caring surgeon. He did my son's snd nephew's appendectomies, my 83 year old dad's hernia, my best friends diverticulitis surgery, in addition to minimally invasive procedures on my husband another family members. I ONLY TRUST DR. MAFFEI with those I love. He's there for you from start to finish, never leaving the small details to someone else to follow through for him. Easy to talk to and very thorough and compassionate.

I had complications from a hernia surgery I had in 2014. I was in pain and also fearful to have surgery again. I had researched many doctors and found Dr.Anthony Maffei. He instantly made me feel at ease and took the time to answer all my questions, and I had many. Dr.Maffei is one of the most caring, compassionate, and professional doctors I have ever met. Every Aspect of my surgery was handled with excellence. I am blessed to have found him and can't say enough about what a wonderful doctor and human being he is. I will forever be grateful.

Dr. Maffei was very dedicated to my as a patient. I had an unusual process of getting approved for a bypass revision and he was patient and understanding throughout. He was a second opinion that I had gotten, and there as no doubt that his expertise and confidence made him the right choice. I have never had a doctor be so concerned about me that he accommodated me prior to his vacation with enough time to see that he was available personnaly for my post op care. Although I was a difficult revision, he did not waiver and stuck by me so that the outcome was positive and life changing! I highly recommend Dr Maffei to anyone who is in need of life saving weight loss surgery.

Dr. Maffei is a very competent, compassionate surgeon. He is knowledgeable, and yet also very down to Earth. I have recommended him to several of my friends and colleagues without reservation.
