Dr. April Chang-Miller, MD

I read other so so reviews of Dr Chang-Miller prior to seeing her but thought shes’s at Mayo, went to Yale, how bad can she be? BAD. Thorough on ordering tests, but cold, impersonal, poor listener. Put things in my file as conclusion speculatively which she never discussed with me once in person and was dead wrong about as cause of my iissues. I felt gross interacting with her, judged, condescending and I went to Mayo because was desperate for help. Thorough with ordering tests but I can never go back and can’t recommend overall. Also her speculative misdiagnosis delayed me getting treatment with medicines I needed another nine months which played a part in furthering permanent damage to my body and increasing my suffering. I am not a bitter person and my aim here is not to put down another person but to protect another person. I wish I had seen someone else and wouldn’t want anyone else to have same experience especially not someone desperate for help. Hoping you get better… and find treatment you need.

I've only met her once. I spent the last two years with one of her colleagues who recently relocated to California. She was amazing and very interested in finding the root cause. I've had a rheumatologist since 1998, then diagnosed with autoimmune disease and inflammatory and reactive arthritis. I've been prescribed several medications over the years including the biologic I'm currently on. During my visit with this provider she simply dismissed almost every symptom I have saying they're not related, what am I doing to cause this? She asked if my shoes were old, asked how much water I drink, and in the end told me it's overuse and osteoarthritis. Then had the gall to ask if I had anything else to add. I shut down and said no. She ordered PT for back stretches and sent me on my way. After having a good cry in the parking lot and thinking maybe for the past 25 years every dr has gotten it wrong, I got angry. Why am I taking these prescribed high risk medications, which are… providing relief, if all I have is osteoarthritis? She also said ahe would not refill 2 of my medications prescribed by her previous colleagues and I would need to get from my PCP. I'm very disappointed in Mayo. I moved from Washington state about 4 years ago where I had wonderful providers. This provider should not be practicing at such a prestigious medical facility. I have other Mayo providers who are outstanding. Very disappointed. I'm not one to leave a bad review, but the fact that she was so dismissive and didn’t take into account my past medical history has me very concerned. I don't believe I will receive the proper treatment.

I booked an appointment with Dr. Chang-Miller and, after reading the reviews, I was about to cancel it... But I didn't and I'm so glad... She is an amazing doctor. She spent 2 hours with me talking about my medical history, doing a physical examination and answering my huge list of questions. I left her office feeling much better and much less anxious about my disease. She is an extraordinary doctor and human being!!

She seemed like she knew what she was talking about at first, but I realized she was trying to explain everything away. She had some half truths in what she said, but it felt more like she was trying to downplay what I had and whether I was a legitimate case. I'm glad she sent me to a hematologist and a physical therapist, but I think her bedside manner needs to change and she needs to be less skeptical. It's not always a coincidence that a number of symptoms appear from unrelated habits.

My comments are similar to what I read from others. Judgemental and haute attitude is how I would categorize Dr. Chang-Miller. I moved from another state with a diagnosis from a highly reputable Rheumatologist and she disagreed and therefore the medication I was taking that helped me was denied by insurance. She would not bend in the slightest.

Never been so humiliated in my life! I'm a busy career professional and have been healthy for most of my life until recently when I started to notice some unusual symptoms. She treated me like I was a hypochondriac. Every symptom, she explained away even though I had confirmed diagnosis from other Dr. and supported by lab work. It took 3 months to get an appt. and what a waste of time! I really expected a Dr. from the Mayo to be of high caliber- not necessarily! Luckily I have found a great rheumatologist that is not part of the Mayo that does treat me with respect, listens to me and was able to diagnose me. Unbelievable!

This MD discounted every symptom I had. I would not revisit her as my MD. Found another MD who identified by disease. This MD made me wait 1 year before I had appropriate treatment for my symptoms. I believe her ego got in the way. Other MD's at Mayo recognized it but because it was not "her idea" she marginalized my symptoms in to every day aches and pains. Hardly !! I am just tough. Wasted my visit on how much water I drank and yogurt I ate. There is also no follow up or treatment planning. They want you to return to primary care. After wasting valueable treatment time I finally have a Rheumatologist who is listening to my symptoms not deciding what they are.
