Summary
Kenneth L. Silverstein, M.D., a practicing anesthesiologist since 1989, is the chairman of Christiana Care's Department of Anesthesiology. Since he began leading the department in 2004, Dr. Silverstein has focused on finding new ways to improve how he and his colleagues take care of patients and manage their recovery. When he challenged the department to develop a safer method for delivering oxygen to patients, the anesthesiology team introduced a system to administer the gas at reduced concentrations in a measurable and predictable fashion. This system reduced the threat of fire in the operating room without compromising patient care. It is now used for many different types of surgery. Under Dr. Silverstein's leadership, the health system also developed a strategy to assess fire risks. This helped raised the staff's awareness about fire hazards in the operating room. Dr. Silverstein received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine in New York City. He was a …resident and a fellow in anesthesiology at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He completed his clinical fellowship in anesthesiology at Harvard Medical School in Boston. A certified member of the American Board of Anesthesiology, Dr. Silverstein has been a staff anesthesiologist at Christiana Care since 1991. He also served as clinical director of Christiana Hospital's operating rooms for six years. In addition to his hospital duties, Dr. Silverstein has an appointment at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Numerous groups have invited Dr. Silverstein to lecture on new trends in caring for sedated patients. He also collaborated with Susan M. Steele, M.D., a noted anesthesiologist, to produce an instructional videotape for anesthesiologists about using the fiberoptic bronchoscope to examine a patient's airways.
