Dr. Gary Trey, MD

I have had multiple positive visits at the Holtzman group; however, during a recent visit with Dr. Gary Trey I experienced the most unprofessionalism, disrespect, and poor medical care that I have ever experienced. The following is a description of my visit from 03/21/23. - Dr. Gary Trey called me in to the exam room by the wrong name, when I corrected him he said, “oh, well I haven’t read your chart.” - With little to no medical/social history and before examine me, Dr. Gary Trey began explaining how certain shaving practices can lead to ingrown hairs causing inflamed cysts/abscesses (my reason for the visit was an inflamed cyst in my armpit) - When I told him that I am a PA student and had previously worked in dermatologist for 1.5 years, Dr. Trey stated “oh, I was talking to you like you didn’t know anything” and “what I just told you might not be true” - He then stated “I will examine the area of concern (my armpit) and then likely perform a breast exam” - He suggested incision… and drainage and stated that a PA should perform this procedure as he “hasn’t done one of these in a while” - He did not ask for my consent or agreement to the treatment plan (breast exam was not indicated) and did not ask my consent to bring the nurse or PA into the room - When the PA (Andy Huynh PA-C) joined the visit, Andy began asking me background questions; Dr. Trey did not allow me to answer and spoke over me and for me, interrupting me multiple times - Andy had patients for the next several hours; Dr. Trey stated to the PA “I can just do it myself—what do I need to do, just stick a scalpel into it?” - Dr. Trey began dictating my visit note while I was in the room without letting me know he was doing this - In the middle of dictating Dr. Trey stated “let me know if I say anything that’s incorrect” and continued to list a review of systems such as “patient denies fever, patient denies sleep problems, etc. etc.” without asking me if I actually did have any of these symptoms - I elected to leave the visit and scheduled a follow-up appointment with Andy the PA later that day, which I later cancelled I was contacted by an administrator the following day as her staff informed her that I left the appointment visibly upset. This administrator was very kind and after hearing my experience said that she would speak with higher-ups about how to address the situation. As I have not heard anything since this phone call and do not know whether the issue was addressed, I have decided to post this information so that future patients can make an informed choice about whether or not to see Dr. Trey.

Dr. Trey mis-diagnosed me with a very serious condition. Every time I saw him, my alleged diagnosis would change, but he was unwilling to run tests to prove any of his guesses. He spoke down to me in a very belittling way and made me feel uncomfortable being open and honest with him.

Gary Trey is a very good doctor! I have encountered him in my work capacity and when I needed a GI doctor for myself (and at one point, my husband whom he was able to diagnose right away after a previous misdiagnosis) he was the one I turned to. He is patient and explains everything clearly (he also uses pictures in anatomy books, which makes it very visual), and most importantly, I am confident that he will know (or figure out) what the problem is. Dr. Trey uses dictation for his notes right in from of you, and some patients may find it unusual, but I feel it's actually a chance for a patient to hear a recap and come up with additional questions, if any. You can also ask questions by email or phone call, which is very convenient. It is also helpful that one can usually get an appointment within a reasonably short period of time, at least from my experience. I highly recommend Dr. Trey!

I was referred to Dr. Trey by my PCP for on-going GI issues. It was very easy to get an apppintment with him on a day that worked with my schedule. He took me early when I arrived before my scheduled appointment. Private office. Spent quite an adequate time with me and dove into all of my medical issues.

Excellent and compassionate physician

My former PCP, who was also a GI doctor and with whom I had a 40 year relationship, recommended Dr. Trey as i wanted a GI physician in private practice who also saw primary care patients. I have now been his patient for two years. My expectations of clinical care have evolved through the years. I don't necessarily require the "hand holding" or reassurance I might have when I was younger. Dr. Trey takes care of business, handles the exam and questioning efficiently and I move on. It works out very well for me. He returns calls when necessary. He does answer e-mails. When I send a refill request for medication in the mail, I get it back w/ in a couple of days. I like the arrangement and his office staff is very kind and efficient.

Dr. GARY is our family doctor since 2009. We both love the way he treats us ...He is the top notch GI worldwide. How lucky we ffeel he is SIMPLY THE BEST ....

Love this doctor. Caring, very knowledgable, encouraging. Takes the time to educate you. Wish more doctors were like him.

I have been with Dr. Trey for many years. After surgery many years ago for a laproscopic nissan funduplication, The surgeon never came by to see how I was doing. Dr. Trey did and was very caring.He has always called me back when I called his office to answer any medical problems.His prognosis for any medical problems was quick and accurate. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a great doctor.
