I had a wonderful experience with Dr Atwa and his staff throughout the entire process of removing my gastric lap-band; however, the anesthesiology group he selected (LONG ISLAND ANESTHESIA LLP) was not in-network with my health insurance plan and furthermore, they failed to notify me of the substantial out of pocket cost. A year later, LIAP LLP referred me to Richard Sokoloff, Attorney at Law who put me in collections, froze my bank account, put me in court like a criminal and sent me the Marshall to confiscate my belongings. I believe that it is extremely important to give patients the best and most cost-effective options for services according to their policy. At the same, I believe Dr Atwa should be more careful in selecting the interdisciplinary group that support his work, so that, his professionalism and integrity wont't be jeopardize or dishonored. Although I was pleased with my visit, I was not informed about test results. I called several times for MRI results to be explained and never received a call back. I feel this is inexcusable since test was ordered by him. I had to consult another doctor for a review.

MUST READ: My wife needed to have emergency surgery to remove a very large cyst from her ovary. Her OBGYN called the hospital and advised them of the emergency procedure required. At the suggestion of her OBGYN, her appendix should also be removed as it was on the same side as the ovary with the cyst. Dr. Atwa was introduced and was brought on to do the appendectomy. When we received Mr. Atwa's (he will always be a Mr. to me because he will never perform surgery on anyone I love) bill, he charged us $6,000 for the initial consult, $30,000 for the appendectomy and $3,300 for assistance on the cyst removal. At this point the insurance company has paid the two later charges, but only paid $450 of the $6,000. I spoke to his billing manager and they were doing me the favor of putting my account on hold because my insurance company was taking its time in making the payment. Last month I gave the billing manager the info provided from my insurance company, fax number, claim number and advised… her that she needs to be involved because the insurance company is not helping. The insurance company then paid on the $3,300 noted above, but did not pay the remainder of the $6,000. THIS REVIEW is written to put my situation regarding this man on paper. IMO (In my opinion), $39,000 for this surgery is egregious. The excuse of, oh the insurance will pay, does not feed the greater good because paying these ridiculously high charges means an increased cost in medical insurance. I had my appendix removed the year before that and that surgeon only charged me $8,500 for the same procedure. IMO, THIS GUY IS A RIPOFF. I understand he does something not just anyone can do, but I am professional, deal with professionals, and I know when someone is taking advantage of an emergency and this guy did. His billing manager made it clear that if I donâ??t want to proceed, she cannot help and will send me to collections. As opposed to saying, let me speak to the doctor and lets see what we can do. Iâ??m sorry, but collecting almost $34,000 for a consult one evening and a routine appendectomy the following morning is more than enough. By the way, I gave him two stars because he was able to remove the appendix. Please beware, see the bigger picture here and request another surgeon. I have retained the services of an attorney and have been advised to give the insurance company one more opportunity to make the payment and if not, have him write a letter to the doctor.

If you aren't going specifically for bariatric, and are going for any other type of out patient surgical procedure, it is a ripoff. I was criticized for my personal health choices even though I was there to have a cyst removed, which was completely unrelated, and I didn't appreciate the unnecessary judgment.

Dr. Atwa was terrific, he has help me and my daughter with our weight and reflux problems where we had failed to find success with other treatments. Great hands, wonderful compassion , great office staff!!

Dr. Atwa performed surgery on my 74 yrs old mother with history of COPD and he did a great job...after the surgery was completed he spend about 15min with us showing us pictures of the gall blader removal and explained every details of the surgery...he also gave us a follow up appt and was just great experiance...

Excellent - couldn't recommend anyone with a higher rating

I was in a great deal of pain and he walked out of the room. acted like he was bothered. My pain was caused by a procedure performed in Mather hospital. You would think he would be more understanding. He left me emotionally scared and angry.
