Dr. Jolene Jan Shuman, MD

My mother is an elderly patient of Dr. Shuman. I accompanied her to a visit last week. Upon the start of the visit, Dr Shuman states: “You have 5 minutes - that’s it.” From there it got worse… My mother is overweight; diabetes and hypothyroidism runs in the family. Dr Shuman has never tested my mother for either condition. Dr Shuman was already doing blood work for my mother during the visit. I asked her to test my mother’s A1C and thyroid. Note that all the doctor has to do was literally check a few extra boxes in the lab form - that’s it. Yet she refused with no rationale. At one point while questioning her rationale she yelled at me and told me that I wasn’t a doctor. I have been a healthcare professional for over 20 years - this was the most unprofessional and non data driven experience I have seen in medicine. Dr Shuman should not be practicing medicine, and I highly recommend that if you have a parent to keep them away from Dr Shuman.

Dr. Shuman is a great Dr, but also a real person who treats you like one too. I've gotten great treatment, realistic advice and some good laughs with her since she has become my primary care physician.

Loved, Dr Shuman! She listened to all my concerns, was very thorough. Finally found a doctor in Portsmouth that I am very comfortable with!!
