Dr. Michael Jay Halperin, MD

I write this review with great disappointment and dismay. Just over twenty years ago I fractured cervical vertebrae in a car accident and was skillfully treated by Dr. Halperin. My accident brought me within millimeters of being paralyzed and I have been both grateful to and in awe of him for his care - until today. Today I traveled from Manhattan to Franklin, CT for an appointment with him regarding the arthritis that he predicted twenty years ago. I thought it was worth the time and expense to take Amtrak out to Connecticut because he would have my films from my injury and would be most capable of recommending a treatment plan. Instead, to my surprise, I was seen by a physician's assistant. I assumed when Tom came into the examining room that his role was similar to the resident fellow who examines my knee prior to my consultations with my orthopedist in HSS in NYC. To make matters worse, Tom was not aware of my history with Dr. Halperin or which cervical vertebrae I had injured… and when he looked at my x-rays he questioned if I had fractured vertebrae. Had he researched my case, he would have known that the arthritis revealed in the films today was located where the fractures happened. When he described what he saw in the films he used elementary terms as if I had never gone through treatment for fractured cervical vertebrae, I found it odd but assumed that Dr. Halperin would be meeting with me and Tom was just doing the prep work. When it became apparent that Dr. Halperin would not be making an appearance, I told Tom how disrespected and deceived I felt. He left the examining room without providing an explanation or an apology. If I had wanted to be seen by a physician's assistant, there are ample opportunities for this in Manhattan. Rather, I had traveled specifically to see the surgeon who had treated my original injury. When I made the appointment I carefully explained my reason for needing to see Dr. Halperin and that I was traveling from Manhattan. The scheduler was well-aware and scheduled my appointment on a day when he would be in the office, as opposed to the Monday after Easter, when I had hoped to combine time with family in Rhode Island with seeing him on the way back to New York. I do not know if the message never reached Dr. Halperin or if he did not care, but I feel disrespected and deceived, and question if I received the proper level of care today. I was later told by an employee at Orthopedic Partners that it is a regular practice for orthopedic patients at the practice to be seen by a physician's assistant. No one explained this to me when I made the appointment. Had I known, I would not have traveled three hours in each direction on Amtrak. I am in shock and furious about having had my time and money wasted, only to receive substandard care. After this experience, I could never recommend Dr. Halperin or Orthopedic Partners to anyone.

I was referred to Dr. Halperin by my primary care physician, in 2017. I have had spinal stenosis for over four years. Six months ago I could not walk without a cane or at times a walker. With Dr. Halperin's care and his referral to the Advanced Back and Neck Care Center in Groton, in May of this year. I am now walking without a cane or walker. I have some pain but it is intermittent. Dr. Halperin is excellent in his field.

He was recommended by my chiropracter.

Went to see Dr Halperin since he had performed my first surgery on my L4 and L5. I was unable to have him perform my second surgery since he did not take my insurance at that time. For the past two weeks I have been in excruciating pain. After an MRI, I learned that my L1/L2 disc is now herniated. I went to see Dr Halperin today in the hopes that he could at least give me advice as to what was causing my pain, and perhaps perform any surgery that was necessary. After spending over an hour in the waiting room, another 15 minutes of intake with the P.A (who was very understanding, sympathetic and helpful), Dr. Halperin came into the room, shut off the computer which was displaying my MRI, and told me that he would not offer any advice/opinion on my condition, or perform any needed surgery since another doctor had performed the second surgery and botched it up. I could not believe the insensitivity, the lack of compassion, and basically leaving me alone, in the dark without any guidance… at all. Dr. Halperin took an oath to help people and do â??no harmâ??. I do not see how abandoning a former patient, who obviously who is in such extreme pain, is anything but immoral, cold-hearted,and completely lacking in compassion. Do not see this doctor if you expect to be treated like a worthwhile human being.

I would recommend to seek medical help at the NOG. They did right by me!

I went to him for a second opinion...he was rude and arrogant. Couldn't give me the time of day. His bed side manners stink! I left there in tears, no compassion...so sad that some doctors think they are God...he needs humility in his life, and prayers!

Had a herniated disc. The doc did the surgery. Walked out of the hospital the same day and the pain gone forever! Great doc and a great guy, too!
