Dr. William Young Jr. JR., MD

I was seen by Dr young last year for further work up of a pituitary tumor. I have never met such a condescending and sexist doctor in my life. I was there for the specialty labs and did the prep instructed. His advice was to simply “get used to being a woman” and he denied me the full lab work up despite already being diagnosed by imaging to have a tumor. Mayo Clinic should be ashamed to have a doctor like this on staff.

As someone with lifelong chronic conditions and autoimmune issues, I’ve seen dozens of doctors in my life but Dr. Young stands out as the most condescending one I’ve ever encountered. After some abnormal lab results and very obvious symptoms, my primary care physician referred me to the Mayo Clinic. The day if my appointment Dr. Young walked into the exam room and immediately said, "I don’t know why you’re here or why they even put you on my schedule." Then, he introduced himself. Those first 25 seconds set the tone for the entire appointment. He barely glanced at the typed list of symptoms I’d prepared, dismissed my concerns outright, and told me there was nothing wrong with me, though he’d run a few labs "if it would make me feel better." When the results came back normal, he discharged me as a patient. Fortunately, another Mayo doctor, concerned about my symptoms, ordered additional testing and discovered a nodule on my left adrenal gland. That physician reached out to Dr.… Young, who, once again, responded condescendingly, insisting there was nothing wrong with me. However, because I have high blood pressure and I am on a calcium channel blocker and ACE inhibitor, he reluctantly suggested an aldosterone and renin test. The results were borderline, but Dr. Young dismissed them and again discharged me. Thankfully, I refused to accept this and sought a second opinion from an endocrinologist in another state. Immediately, she questioned Mayo’s work. The proper protocol for hyperaldosteronism testing requires normal potassium levels—yet Dr. Young had never checked mine. My new doctor did, and sure enough, my potassium was low. Three weeks later upon repeat testing it was still low. Not only had Dr. Young disregarded this testing protocol, but he’d also failed to account for my medications, which interfere with results making all the testing that was ran completely invalid and usesless. How does the so-called “national expert" in primary aldosteronism make such a critical error? His ego and determination to be "right" clearly mattered more than listening to his patient or following proper medical guidelines. Twenty months after my horrific experience with Dr. Young, I have received a clear, undeniable diagnosis: Conn’s syndrome. I've requested my AVS to be scheduled at the Cleveland Clinic because I have zero trust in Mayo’s endocrinology department to listen to me, let alone help me. I can only hope the AVS will show my condition is unilateral and that surgery will provide a cure.

He put his ego ahead of his patients. He apparently has problems with women.

Easily one of the worst doctors, if not the worst physician, I have had ever met in a lifetime full of medical issues and visits. He is arrogant, dismissive, downright rude & condescending, unconscionably lazy, and simply unable to do even the bare minimum required by a job -- any job. He has 0 bedside manner, 0 compassion/empathy/care, 0 knowledge of his own specialty (or really, even the field of medicine broadly), 0 willingness to try to assess/diagnose/treat/put in a bare minimum level of effort required by anyone who has employment, and 0 ability to be a human, much less a provider of healthcare. Not sure how this man is employed by a place as prestigious as Mayo Clinic; he's not worthy of even working at an 'under-the-table roadside clinic.' Mayo, if you read these reviews, I strongly encourage you to reflect on the implications of having in your employ someone who stands so antithetical to your brand; it's damaging not just from a patient care perspective, but also for your own… financial bottom line.

We've been trusting Dr. Young with our care for over 30 years. He is a great doctor that provides wonderful care.

Best Dr. I've ever had!

Dr. Young is very kind, supportive,and down to earth. . My local endocrinologist in NC recommended that I seek his expertise for my case. He immediately made me feel at ease and gave me reassurance that I could continue oral treatment for my rare adrenal disease and discussed the options for surgery if I elected to do so. I would definitely recommend him and go back if needed.

Dr. Young is the best physician I know. Anyone who has read his publications or experienced his work firsthand can attest to him being one of the best (if not THE best) endocrinologists in the world (and, most probably, also the best doctor in several other areas). His bedside manner is superb, and his calm, knowledgeable, competent, and professional demeanor places the patient completely at ease. I cannot imagine being in better hands.

Thorough, attentive, knowledgeable, and down to earth. Great communication skills and bedside manner. Definitely the best of the best.

I saw this Dr.Young on a recent visit to the mayo and was not impressed.Degree's may educate you,but they don't teach you about compassion,this important piece is sorely missing from him.An earlier review called him condescending,I'll also add arrogant and insecure.He had an assistant with him,it was obvious he wanted to show how smart he was,sadly,she probably won't learn much from him.While the Mayo itself runs like a well oiled machine,and his staff was very competent,they do so despite him.I would not recommend this doctor .
