Dr. Ealena Stephanie Callender, MD

Dr Callendar was a new OBGYN at the hospital I was at when I went into Labor. Out of all the OBGYNs that I could've had and I ended up stuck with her. As a first time mom, I had no idea what to expect. I ended up on an epidural for 36 hours when it finally came time to push. I was pushing and pushing for about 2 hours, and nothing was happening. Since I was extremely tired and hungry, I begged for a C Section. Dr Callendar stated "Most 1st time Moms push for at least 3 hours". As someone who was already in a huge amount of distress, hearing this was absolutely shocking. Her bedside manner is non existent. She kept trying to deter me from a C section until she finally allowed me to have one, but not without making me feel guilty for the choice. I won't even get into the infections and terrible healing process I had to go through. My incision took over 4 months to heal. I'm disgusted with the way she presents herself in front of her patients. Especially those in active labor. AVOID THIS… DOCTOR AT ALL COSTS.

She is the worst doctor that I have ever met in my entire life. She is extremely rude and nasty... I wanted to change my OB because of her.

Dr. Callender is cold, rude and dismissive. Doesn't take paitents seriously.

Rude, insensitive, judgemental, and should not be practicing ANY medicine especially with expectant mothers.Will never allow her near me again, should have walked out during my visit. She made me very upset by not reading my file before attempting to offer her advice. Bad DR.

Rude. I almost told her to get her hands off of me in the middle Of my 8 week ultrasound because of her condescending nasty attitude for a reason that I am still not sure of. If she wasn’t temporary at the office I was going to I would have immediately found somewhere else.

I wish I had seen the other reviews before I agreed to see her. She was part of a team of doctors at my obgyn. I saw her while I was pregnant and immediately did not like her. Very cold, and responded to my questions as though they were ridiculous and I was wasting her time. Should have trusted my instincts. Had to see her again a few weeks post partum when I had mastitis. She dismissed my symptoms and told me it was just a cold. I also had the misfortune of being rescheduled to her for my IUD insertion. It was the longest and most painful procedure I've had outside of labor. When I went back for a follow up, the iud could not be located. She is no longer at that practice, but I'm still dealing with the consequences of her poor care.

I saw Dr. Elena Callender because she was the first available appointment. My severe dysmenorrhea had become worse and I was beginning to cramp up to two weeks prior to the start of my period. I was hoping to speak with someone about finding a diagnosis for possible endometriosis or other complications. Dr. Callender told me that there was nothing she could do because if I did have endometriosis, there was no treatment available so there would not be any point in being tested for it. She advised that I go on the pill, and when I told her that the pill had made me cramp worse and bleed for long periods of time, she told me that wasn't possible and I wasn't taking it properly. (I was taking it every day at the same time.) She was extremely dismissive and did not seem to take me or my symptoms seriously at all. I asked her what type of pill she would recommend to help with the cramping, if I were to decide to try it again, and she became visibly annoyed and responded that "she didn't… know off the top of her head," and she would have to consult the system. Frustrated and trying to hold back tears, I asked her what my other options were. I could not keep calling out of work due to period pain. She told me the only thing she could do was a physical evaluation to test for some sort of infection. When I got the results back a few days later, I discovered she had just tested me for STD's. I left the office in tears, feeling hopeless. Dr. Callender seemed to lack knowledge, compassion, and professionalism. I only hope that other patients do not have to experience this frustration.

I was required to see her as it was office policy to see all of the physicians at least once. I was 5 months pregnant and complained of severe, debilitating migraines. Insteaded of asking me questions or investigating further, she ordered a CT scan. Did I mention that I was pregnant? I called the office back and spoke to the nurse practitioner whom I knew well and trusted. I told her what the doctor ordered. The NP was furious! She told me not to get the CT scan and to simply take out my contacts. After taking out my contacts, I didn't have another migraine. The doctor seemed inconvenienced, rushed, and truly unprofessional. She has since left this particular practice and I am glad she is gone. I would not see her if I had other options.

I am not surprised to see all of the negative reviews. Callender is extremely rude with a horrible bed side manner. She made it quite obvious that she felt I was a waste of her time. I was forced to see her when I was pregnant with my son since you have to see all of the doctors.She was the doctor the day after I gave birth to my son and had given me pain medicine that I should not have been on breast feeding my son! She also came off judge mental when I said that I did want my son to have a circumcision. I will be refusing to see her with my next child. (fingers crossed she wont be the doctor on call if I go into labor.) I am surprised that the Center for Womens Health keep her. I have heard from so many others about how bad she was to them as well. It is a shame she is a part of a practice that Dr. Thom, who is fantastic, is a part of.

My appointment with Dr. Callender was the worst experience with my "yearly exam" that I've ever dealt with. She was very cursory, did not ask if I had any questions/concerns, did not ask about my answer "yes" to experiencing pain during sex, and did not warn me she was inserting the speculum. Then, she bluntly told me that I needed to lose weight before even considering to try to conceive. At a size 18, I know I've got weight to lose, and I am trying, but there were so many nicer ways to express herself. She was impatient and didn't want to stay with me any longer than she had to, and I was very displeased.
