Dr. Edileola Tolulope Makinde, MD

The first rule of medicine is to listen to your patients! I was sent to the ER by my doctor who called ahead with suspicion of an ectopic rupture. When we arrived I could barely stand let alone was yet no one came to greet or assist me with a chair. I wait almost 20 minutes for triage and began vomiting as she wheeled me back to the ER and was writhing in pain. They did the belly ultrasound and asked if I could give a urine sample before the transvaginal ultrasound. The other tech helped me to the bathroom. I provided the sample and told them it was becoming more difficult to start a stream. The sent an OB who was not convinced I was having an ectopic pregnancy and despite me providing detailed information and signing a release from my doctor she did not review scans. She said we need more bloodwork and an ultrasound tomorrow. I said "I'm not going home to die! Last ectopic I went to 3 hospitals before being treated with methotrexate and now know I'm BRCA 1 positive that is not… an option. I don't want this to rupture and risk dying or infection. After agreeing to admit me I was placed on the oncology ward where they specialize in cancer not pregnancy complications. I demanded a new doctor but was told she was the only one available. I struggled to breathe and was given beta blockers because the OB was not convinced I was having an ectopic pregnancy. I told the nurse I was having more pressure when trying to pee and trouble breathing. She gave me oxygen. The internal medicine doctor ordered a CT of my chest. After a hours of declining urinary activity I let the nurse no I could no longer pee and I felt nothing but pain pressure and bloating in my abdomen. I begged for a catheter the doctor instead told me I told her I wasn't asking about surgery but I need a catheter or something to relieve myself. After continuous banter she agreed to the catheter and said if my pressure drops then we will go to the OR. My husband then asked if we could a vitals machine because he was concerned about my blood pressure dropping in the night. She told him "I've seen nothing to indicate she will have a catastrophic rupture and we can't just have surgery for the fun of it!" That when I lost it. I told her she was paged to address my bladder not surgery, and how dare she imply that any of this is fun for me. This is my 7th loss and unlike the 5 miscarriages I suffered this pain is different it I localized to my lower right quadrant and accompanied with rectal pain, vaginal pain and pressure and urinary retention. She apologized and said she will not use that term again but we'll stick with the plan to test in the AM and left. Once the catheter was put after painful misses, about 500 units of urine came out. The next morning Dr. came in and said she would skip the ultrasound because my blood levels dropped and I need surgery. A surgeon I hadn't met performed the surgery and found an ectopic rupture in my right fallopian tupe. I received conflicting information from Dr. Makinde and the surgeon as to whether I received antibiotics. A patient advocate and the chaplain came by after hearing rumblings of my experience. After being discharged, I woke up with fever and went to another hospital. They called to see if BSW gave me antibiotics but Dr. Makinde's supervisor saw conflicting info in my chart. He gave me antibiotics and told me to follow-up with Dr. Makinde the next day with a patient advocate. I was sent to labor and delivery to a room with an incubator ??. A chaplain and nurse stayed for support when Dr. Makinde came. When I asked what happened with the baby? She said it is mainly cells and placenta tissue in these cases. I asked what was it in my case. She said most likely cells and tissue. The chaplain interrupted and said. It was a human life and we handle your baby with care and respect. The dr. said I'm just telling her the truth! I felt myself getting upset that she minimized my loss to a hunch of cells and tissues. I said "I'll wait on pathology." How in 2020 can the this possibly be considered standard care?

I delivered my second baby at Baylor in Carrollton, and Dr. Makinde happened to be the doctor on staff in Labor and Delivery that night so she had to care for me while my Obstetrician was en route to the hospital. I did not like Dr. Makinde's bedside manner and she and her nurses did not listen to me. I asked for an epidural and they had to find my vein to get the IV going. I told them over and over that my vein is hard to find in my hand so they shook just find the one in the crook of my arm, which is extremely visible. They refused to listen and kept bringing different nurses to poke and prod me over and over to try and find my vein. Finally, after probably about an hour of doing this, causing me to still suffer with no epidural, they placed the IV where I told them to do it all along, the crook of my arm. As a black doctor, one would think Dr. Makinde would be aware of the fact that many Black women are not listened to during labor and deliver and would have treated me better. I… am extremely disappointed in her as a doctor, specifically a Black doctor. She also never smiled or gave amy encouraging words while I suffered, waiting for my epidural. She did not have a friendly, reassuring, and caring bedside manner.

She only seem to care about the financial side of things not so much about my health My Baby's health. Needless to say because of her I will never go back to Baylor in McKinney regardless of how nice and go the other doctors and nurses were.
