Dr. Edward Hoben Calvert, MD

Went to ER on a Saturday because my regular doctor was obviously closed. When I last saw my doctor on Thursday he insisted I go to the ER if there were certain changes to my conditions. Because I have 2 autoimmune disorders things can get out of hand quickly for me. At the time of my visit to the ER both of my issues that my doctor was concerned about were happening. One was a painful rash that spread rapidly through the night. Because I was admitted to the hospital with MRSA for IV antibiotics just a few months prior my doctor has been keeping a close eye on this rash. Our agreement was if the rash changed or spread over the weekend I’d go to the ER because his concern thst it could be staff/MRSA again or shingles which apparently can be difficult to diagnose in the beginning before the bumps begin to blister. His other concern that it could be shingles if it spread only on the left side of my body. This rash change overnight came with pretty awful symptoms including the spread of the… rash doubled in size very quickly. It spread to my left side, left breast, left armpit. Overnight I could not get on top of the pain, nausea and vomiting. I also had a severe headache like nothing I’ve ever experienced. I was exhausted, dehydrated and scared because my immune system is weak. Our other concern was a few months ago I had a rash on the same breast which led to a cancer scare and immediate lumpectomy in the same breast. Because of my autoimmune disease I ended up with a severe surgical site infection that took almost 3 months to heal and resulted in 2 trips to the same ER. Given my resent history I was obviously scared and at my doctors request headed to the ER. I saw the nurse at triage and she was awesome and took the time to look at my resent ER visits and why put it all together and understood my fear. Dr. Calvert on the other hand walked in and the first words out of his mouth were I am an ER Doctor and don’t do or know much about a rash. I then attempted to explain my resent health issues, concerns about rashes and my other symptoms. He instantly cut me off and said let me see the rash. Took a quick peak concluded it was just a little rash prescribed some cream and away he went. I couldn’t believe his poor bedside manner. Instantly disregarding my symptoms by choosing to not listen to them. He made me feel like an idiot right off the bat. All my resent medical history was right there on his computer but unlike my awesome nurse obviously chose to not read them. At the very least he should have taken my blood for a standard CBC and would have seen I am severely dehydrated from vomiting through the night. When I become dehydrated I typically have a rise in my potassium level or hyperkalamia which is extremely dangerous because the main symptom is cardiac toxicity. Which can be deadly but also easily corrected with IV fluids. This is of extra concern for me because I suffer from a rare autoimmune disease called Dextrocardia. My heart is backwards and on the right side making it difficult for my heart to filter out illness. Again this is in my chart which obviously was not read by Dr. Calvert and my main reason for getting myself to the ER. I knew I needed IV fluids to get hydrated and my potassium level where it needed to be. Also since my rash had more than doubled in size in under 10 hours accompanied with nausea, vomiting, fever and pain the meds I’m currently on are obviously not working l thought surely Dr. Calvert would prescribe a different antiviral medication which works like Tamiflu during flu season with only has a small window of opportunity to help with the symptoms and shorten the length of recovery time. I know my body well and was stunned to hardly get a word out before being cut off and basically scolded for coming to the ER with a little rash. Also I was the only patient in the ER. Not one other person in the waiting room besides a security guard watching football highlights. Dr. Calvert could have easily taken a few minutes to read my chart and most importantly he should have taken the time to talk and communicate with me and at the very least hear me out enough to get fluids in me and by all means take some blood for a standard CBC which showed at a different hospital 45 min away an elevated white blood count, autoimmune issues and elevated potassium level/hypercalamia but Dr. Calvert didn’t bother with a quick and telling CBC for a silly little rash. I’ve had some bad experiences in hospitals in the past but this one was by far the worst. I felt my pain and symptoms were belittled, invalid and unimportant. I felt like a child being scolded and ridiculed. My feelings were hurt significantly by my doctor in the ER. This is shockingly disrespectful behavior for any Doctor. My Stepfather was a well known and loved pediatrician who worked for years in the same hospital and had a practice next door at The Green Clinic in Ruston. He dedicated much of his time over 30+ years before he passed away dedicated to help build this hospital and clinic into excellent facilities with good quality care. I know he would absolutely not approve Dr. Calverts hasty rush to judge, poor bedside manner, ineffectiveness, failure to follow standard procedure and most importantly his refusal to communicate with his only patient in the ER at the time. I walked out of that hospital crushed and in tears because Dr. Calvert not only hurt my feelings but belittled me on many levels including not taking the time to follow standard procedure or to communicate with me at all and went as far to cut me off when I attempted to communicate my symptoms and concerns. Absolutely the worst demeaning experience I’ve ever had in a hospital. I’m now at a different hospital where my CBC was done right away and the results validated my symptoms.
