Dr. Edward C. Lai, MD

Dr. Lai is an outstanding physician and a brilliant eye surgeon. He is very quick to assess what the situation is, what is needed, and has all the skill to provide excellent patient care.

My regular ophthalmologist (Dr. Sobel) was on vacation so I spun the wheel and Weill Cornell came up close to my apt. Thankfully Dr. Lai was efficient, informative, comforting. I would highly recommend him for his smarts, his skills, and his manner.

I took my father to see Dr. Lai for cataracts. He's an excellent doctor who takes his time to see and listen to his patients. He operated on both eyes and did an excellent job on it. The first time we did it, we were so amazed at how well it was done and the vision was restored. He now sees perfect 20/20 out of both eyes and he's super happy to be able to read and watch TV again. I highly recommend

Thorough and courteous

I went to Dr. Lai for the PRK surgery. Living in Chicago, I had to travel three times to NYC for an initial checkup, a followup appointment, and the actual surgery. It was well worth the plane ticket. Dr. Lai is witty and thorough .(Not that it mattered after the PRK, but he determined that the prescription I had been using for years was far too strong.) He followed up with me several times after the surgery, making sure I was taking my meds and took my calls when I had a question about the healing process. Nine months later, the results of my PRK are fantastic. I think if you want top of the line surgery, Dr. Lai is the right person to see.

I have been seeing Dr. Lai for two years following a sever eye injury. I have found him to be very generous with his explanations of the various issues that have plagued me while simultaneously being calm and confident in a way that has never conveyed arrogance. My cataract surgery as part of my long ordeal was anything but routine. Dr. Lai was expansive in explaining all of the risks and what he would do to mitigate them. He was realistic but also supportive. I came through the surgery with none of the potential complications and have had more sight in my bad eye than anyone would have imagined from the onset of injury. I owe a great deal to Dr. Lai and all of the doctors, technicians and staff at Weill Cornell Eye associates. Thank you!

Dr. Lai performed PRK laser eye surgery on me and the experience was reassuring and easy. He was always available for any questions and gave me clear after-care instructions. As a healthcare professional myself, I highly recommend him.

I went to see Dr. Lai on a follow up visit after an appointment with another doctor in his practice. The first doctor I saw, and the residents in the office were all caring and attentive, but Dr. Lai seemed really rushed - at the expense of the quality of care. He mumbled his name and introduced himself while he was already looking at my eyes through the machine, and when he was done, he gave me instructions (for how long to take eyedrops for and when I could wear my contact lenses) so quickly that I couldn't even process the information, and he was about to leave. I had to ask him to repeat it two more times, which has never happened to me before - luckily the resident stuck up for me and explained why I needed to wear contacts. He did stay for a minute or two after that and tried to explain the diagnosis to me, but I really didn't understand why he was saying something different than the first doctor - and I'm well educated and a native English speaker, so it's not that I usually… have a problem understanding doctors. A little disconcerting.
