Edward H. Scheid Jr., MD FAANS is the founder and CEO of Neurospine+ and a board-certified neurosurgeon specializing in minimally invasive spine surgery. Although Dr. Scheid has performed more than 5,000 successful spine surgeries, he is not a physician who immediately recommends surgery to his patients.
“I take a step-by-step approach,” Dr. Scheid explained. “The first thing I do is find the real source of the patient’s problem – and I do this in a very deliberate and precise manner.”
After the source of their problem has been pinpointed, Dr. Scheid can then develop an individualized treatment plan that can help relieve their pain and improve the quality of their lives. His extensive training and experience in preoperative spine surgery and spinal cord stimulation for the treatment of chronic pain allows him to help patients who have failed traditional spine surgery and those who have been told they are not candidates for traditional spine surgery. Dr. Scheid graduated …with honors from John Carroll University in Cleveland, OH, where he received the Presidential Scholarship for Academic Achievement. He then attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, graduating with honors as one of the top five students in a class of more than 230 graduates. He was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha and Hobart Amory Hare Medical Societies.
Dr. Scheid remained at Jefferson Hospital for his internship in general surgery and completed his residency in neurosurgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and the Jefferson Hospital for Neurosciences. He then spent several years training at the Delaware Valley Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center, a national center of excellence for the treatment of spinal disorders, where he perfected techniques in spinal surgery and had the unique opportunity to learn from world-class neurosurgical and orthopedic spine surgeons.
Dr. Scheid’s research interest lies in improving the safety of spine surgery. He recently authored a landmark article appearing in The Spine Journal that explained a new neuromonitoring protocol that improves outcomes in lateral access spine surgery. Dr. Scheid is a Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and a member of many prestigious organizations, including the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Academy of Neurological Surgeons, North American Spine Society, and the American Medical Association.
