Dr. Edward Schlissel, DDS

Dr. Schlissel moved to Atlanta to be closer to his daughter and family after a career as a Professor of Dentistry at the School of Dental Medicine at Stony Brook University on Long Island.  He received his dental training at the University of Buffalo, and after graduation, he joined the faculty of the School of Dental Medicine. Currently, he serves as Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at Emory University Medical Center, where he gives seminars to the residents in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
During his 30-year career as a member of the Stony Brook faculty, and later, as Chair of the Department of General Dentistry, Dr. Schlissel held many positions and received many professional awards. He served as Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Director of the General Practice Residency Program. He was elected to membership in Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the national dental honor society. He was a member of the New York State Board …of Dentistry and was a member of the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners (the agency which oversees the clinical examination of aspiring dentists). He is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and is a member of many professional societies, including the Academy of Osseointegration, which studies research on dental implants. 
While at Stony Brook, Dr. Schlissel maintained a busy dental practice with an emphasis on complex restorative care involving the coordination of treatment with periodontists, oral surgeons and orthodontists. While teaching dentistry, he received a Masters of Science degree in Materials Science from the College of Engineering.
He is the author of many articles, research abstracts and book chapters. He lectures widely on  topics in restorative and cosmetic dentistry, including dental implants and dental materials research.
In past summers, Dr. Schlissel has lead a group that provides dental care to Native Americans at the Pine Ridge Indian Health Service Hospital in South Dakota. In his free time, Dr. Schlissel enjoys photography, golf, scuba diving and travel. He lives in Dunwoody with his wife, Elaine.
