Dr. Edward Choi Shin, MD

I was under Dr. Shin's care for over a year after I suddenly started having hip pain. He correctly diagnosed that I had a torn labrum, and indicated I had mild FAI that was causing the torn tissue. Long story short, this was not the full picture. Dr. Shin is a caring and compassionate doctor, but his expertise seems limited to arthroscopic procedures (this is what he recommended for me to fix the torn labrum and shave off the extra bone causing the tear). There are hip preservation specialists who focus more on structural surgeries and several of them told me that the cause of my torn labrum was in fact hip dysplasia (not the tiny bit of extra bone on my femoral neck). They also told me it would be extremely irresponsible to have a scope procedure done without fixing the underlying dysplasia through a different procedure called a PAO. Irresponsible because recovery from a scope is 6-12 months, and the labrum would only tear again if you don't fix the cause for it tearing in the… first place. Also irresponsible because I was nearing the upper age limit for having a PAO (they prefer you to be under 40 certainly, and some docs won't do the procedure unless you're under 35) and would have missed my window if I hadn't gotten a couple of additional opinions to figure this out. Dr. Shin is kind, caring, well intentioned, and cautious (he encouraged me to try PT and other conservative treatments before recommending the scope procedure, which is good)... but missing the hip dysplasia diagnosis was a big fail in my opinion as it could have led me to further injury and failed surgeries. I will also add that his front desk and physician assistants are very nice and helpful, and I never had any issues with billing or appointments.

Doctor Edward Shin is an excellent Orthopedic surgeon, he did a great job on my hip Surgery and him and his staff are been helping me a lot on my recovery. Thank you very much for all your support! Candy Villagomez.
