Dr. Ellen Crowe is both a highly respected Emergency Room physician with decades of experience in acute care and a superb medical detective because of her Board Certified Family Medicine (ABFM) training. Licensed in both California and Indiana, she brings a comprehensive, whole-patient perspective to patient care. Because her brain synthesizes all the tiny details about your health, she is one of the best Doctors you can ask to connect all the dots for your care.
She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Notre Dame and earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. She went on to complete her residency in Family Medicine before dedicating over 20 years to the Emergency Department at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, where she also served as Medical Director of the Emergency Department and the Regional Sexual Assault Clinic. In 2021, she was chosen to lead her hospital’s Domestic Violence and Trauma Team. Whenever …hospitals face their most critical or high-profile cases, they consistently call on Dr. Crowe’s expertise.
Known for her compassion, precision, and honesty, Dr. Crowe has been recognized for having one of the lowest complication rates across her hospital’s staff and one of the lowest patient complaint rates. She needed to document her workload a few years ago: even then Dr. Crowe had more than 45,000 hours in the Emergency Department and personally treated over 110,000 patients herself. It's even more people now. Patients consistently describe her as a careful listener who provides thorough, thoughtful care.
Dr. Crowe grew up in South Bend, Indiana, one of seven sisters. As a child, her family moved to France so her father — a history professor at the University of Notre Dame — could teach abroad. These early experiences instilled in her a deep curiosity, adaptability, and a lifelong love of learning.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Crowe is a lifelong “project person.” She loves to keep her hands busy with woodworking, sewing, and other creative endeavors. She also enjoys cooking, reading, and traveling. Most importantly, she cherishes time with her family, including her five children, four stepchildren, and a growing extended family.
Driven by her desire to serve patients often overlooked in today’s corporate, insurance-driven medical system, Dr. Crowe founded House Call Doctor Thousand Oaks in 2011 alongside her husband, Paul, who serves as the group’s Chief Operations Officer. As its president and founder, she has set high standards that ensure every patient receives attentive, personalized care. Each new symptom is carefully considered because our physicians know you well — avoiding unnecessary auto-referrals to yet another overworked specialist appointment that is months away.
