Dr. Spanier is a graduate of Columbia University and the Wake Forest School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency at Albany Medical College in New York. He is Board Certified and specializes in the treatment of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Additionally, he is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the VCU School of Medicine.

Dr. Spanier has lead support groups for patients and families with eating disorders since 1985. He was elected by his peers to the exclusive list of Best Doctors of America.

I have seen multiple doctors and none of them have spent as much time with me or shown the care and concern he has. The wait is long in the office at times, but he does not rush any of his patients which I appreciate as a patient. I understand that when it is my turn to be in his office he will show the respect and give me the time he gives others. This makes me not mind waiting my turn to see him.

Dr. Spanier specializes in the Eating Disordered population. He is EXTREMELY knowledgable in the field. He takes extra time with his patients and works with your specific needs to customize treatment just for you. He truly cares for his patients and goes out of his way to help. I would very higly recommend him, he is the only psychiatrist I will see, and I live almost 3 hours away. I make special trips to see him.
