Dr. Emil Lawrence Matarese, MD

I’ve seen many doctors and he is by far the best! He’s so caring and genuine! I never felt rushed out even when I had 100 questions and he probably should have! He’s always taken his time and answered any questions I had in a genuine, caring and informed way. I felt so comforted by Dr. Matarese after years of searching for answers! He answered questions I had for years that other neurologists dismissed! I felt seen and heard for once and he gave me answers I had been searching for! Dr. Matarese and his staff are phenomenal! I would recommend to anyone looking for a neurologist!

Dr. M. is very learned, always patient, ready to explain the situation, and personable. You are NOT a number with him, which is very unusual in today's world. A visit with him is always a rewarding experience! BZ

Dr. Matarese is excellent. Unfortunately, we see him a lot.

In 40+ years of dealing with doctors, I have never experienced such amazing care. My son was injured in a ski accident and we tried desperately to see a neurologist. Everyone was booked solid, including Dr. Matarese. But Dr. Matarese gave us the SAME DAY appointment. It was at 5:30 pm, after his office closed. He stayed with us for 2 hours, examining every XRay and CT scan. He diagnosed a concussion and evaluated things that were even unrelated to neurology, like my son's back pain from the accident. He was methodical, going through do's and don'ts, writing a letter to my son's school, explaining what do do and not to do while recovering from brain injury. He treated my son like he was his own kid -- and I've never met this Doctor in my life. He then told us to make another appointment -- after hours, since he was booked solid for a month, for a follow up exam in a week. He had a "Doctor of the Year" plaque on his wall. He deserves it. From a grateful father.

Dr. Matarese is an excellent neurologist, very thorough, and truly wants to help his patients by getting to the true root cause of the patient's ailment, and then treating the cause not the symptom. It would be very refreshing if more doctor's took this approach with patient care. He has a great disposition, and is very knowledgeable, but definitely not to the point of being arrogant like most doctors that I have encountered over the years.

Dr. Matarese takes his time and makes sure he answers all of your questions and concerns. He has a deep knowledge of his field and will go over and beyond to help his patients.

He correctly diagnosed my problem that his associate who saw me while hospitalized completely missed. I say correctly as I subsequently visited a well renowned neurologist associated with Johns Hopkins who confirmed the diagnosis. However, he is very difficult to have a discussion with as he "turns" on you when asked why a particular problem or medication. I understand that his partners left the practice due to his immense ego and difficulty with having condultations. Find someone else, this guy thinks he's God.

I am thankful to know that I am not the only one who found that Dr. Matarese has serious ego issues. I have to agree, everything is okay until you question him and when you do, he cuts you off literally. You will receive a letter in the mail stating he is no longer your doctor and in an emergency dial 911! I think by asking him a question he takes offense, and believes with his huge ego that he is better than you or me. He was such a nice guy and the way he turned on me gives me the creeps. To you who are writing he is a "gift from heaven" wait until you need to ask him a question about medicine, or drug interactions, or scheduled tests. You will no longer be dealing with Dr.Jekyll but Mr. Hyde. Not a nice man. I reported him to St. Mary's in writing and never got a response. When I was there the last time, he trashed the hopsital and asked me if I would want to go as a patient with him to Capital Health in Trenton. Now that is no a professional.

Dr.Matarese came strongy recommended however after one visit he seemed to be a likeable guy but needed to ask him a question about a medication he wanted me to take. I sent an e-mail to him on his portal and the following day he called and told my wife I was sarcastic and he did not appreciate being questioned. I could not get him to call me back but I did get was a certified letter in the mail telling me he was no longer my doctor. I reported to St. Mary's Administration and they said they would "talk" to him. Obviously the hopital doesn't care for this guy is still at te hospital. He told me he was leaving St. Mary's and joining Capital Health in NJ.

Dr. Matarese appeared to be a really nice man and was very helpful after I suffered a seious flare up from my MS. Weeks later, I called and asked his receptionist Sue to ask him a question for me. The following day, Matarese called me back and told me that I was to find another neurologist. I asked him why and he started to scream at me saying " how dare you question me! " Here I find out that he is great until you ask a question on express a concern. This man needs some TLC.
