What is an endocrinologist?

An endocrinologist diagnoses and treats diseases related to your glands, which are organs throughout your body that produce hormones. If you have diabetes, an endocrinologist will be a key member of your healthcare team. That's also true if you have a thyroid disorder. You might see an endocrinologist if you're going through menopause, have issues with fertility, or have certain types of cancer.

When something goes wrong with your glands, it can cause complications that affect other parts of your body, which is why an endocrinologist helps with such a variety of health conditions.

Within the field of endocrinology there are sub-specialties of doctors who specialize in specific diseases. For example, endocrinologists who specialize in diabetes treatment are sometimes known as diabetologists. Pediatric endocrinologists focus on the conditions that primarily affect children.
