Diabetes Linked to Oral Health
Posted onNovember 2, 2011byEditor
A glucometer allows a patient to measure his blood glucose at home.
In the spirit of Diabetes Awareness Month, Dr. Erich Zimmermann and our team want to encourage you to learn about diabetes, its causes, and prevention. As your dentist, Dr. Zimmermann is very concerned with your overall health. He also wants you to know that gum disease is linked to increased risk for developing diabetes, as well as complications for diabetics.
Research from the 2011 National Diabetes Fact Sheet, as published at www.Diabetes.org, tells us that 25.8 million Americans have diabetes, and of those, 18.8 million have been diagnosed. There are 7 million people who are not aware that their bodies cannot break down sugar. They likely suffer with symptoms such as being chronically thirsty and hungry, frequently urinating, sudden weight loss, blurred vision, fatigue, irritability, and infections of the skin, bladder, and gums.
Gum infection, or gum disease, can increase the level of glucose, or sugar, in your blood. Insulin is the chemical that allows the body to break down and use sugar. For someone who has diabetes, the body does not produce sufficient insulin or does not recognize insulin and use it properly. Because of this, gum disease can lead to the development of diabetes, and it may also cause diabetics to experience higher blood sugar levels. Continue reading →

Overnight Dental Health
Posted onOctober 24, 2011byEditor
Saliva is important to keep your mouth moist and wash away excess food particles. When you sleep, your saliva production decreases, so your teeth are in danger overnight. It’s essential to take care of your teeth before going to bed. Let’s examine some nighttime patterns that affect your dental health.
Oral hygiene: You’ve been taught to brush and floss your teeth before going to bed. Since saliva production lessens while you sleep, any particles left on your teeth can feed bacteria overnight. Brushing your teeth for two minutes before bedtime scrubs away plaque and debris on your teeth. Flossing removes bacteria between teeth. It’s also recommended to use a mouthwash to kill any harmful germs lingering in your mouth.
Teeth grinding: Some people unconsciously clench or grind their teeth while they sleep, which is known as bruxism. Excessive grinding puts unnecessary pressure on your teeth. This causes the enamel to wear down, and the teeth to shift or chip. Bruxism also causes headaches, jaw pain, and jaw popping from the tension of your muscles. To protect your teeth from the harmful effects of grinding, ask Dr. Zimmermann about a mouth guard to wear at night.

Ensuring Data Transparency and Trust: A Guide to Vitals Doctor Listings and Reviews

Our provider data is gathered directly from physicians and publicly available databases. Providers who verify their profiles gain the ability to update information, offering additional details about their specialties, education, treated conditions, performed procedures, and accepted insurances.

Reviews on Vitals are submitted by users only. Recognizing the valuable insights these reviews offer into a doctor's reputation, we maintain internal policies and protocols to ensure the quality and accuracy of all reviews. Importantly, providers cannot delete or alter reviews independently. Reviews can only be deleted or changed following an internal assessment by our customer service team.

Your feedback is highly valued and we encourage you to contact our support team should you encounter any issues.
