Dr. Erik Joseph Modlo, MD

I left my appointment with Dr. Erik Modlo feeling dismissed, unheard, and ultimately unable to continue the visit. I came to the appointment seeking a thorough evaluation of longstanding PCOS and significant changes in my body that began after my third pregnancy. I am 10 months postpartum and was looking for a physician who would help investigate potential root causes, not simply discuss diet or weight. I had prepared a clear list of concerns, including severe fatigue, body aches, difficulty losing weight despite healthy lifestyle changes, and the ways my body has changed postpartum. Instead, I repeatedly felt cut off while trying to explain my history. The conversation quickly became centered on diet, and when I attempted to provide context, I did not feel that my concerns were being heard. At one point, Dr. Modlo made the comment, “Why do you keep sticking your finger in the light socket?” That analogy felt dismissive and minimizing given the reason I was seeking care. I said that… I don’t think it’s that simple. He dismissed me again and said, it was. I got quiet because I started to tear up. He then told me that it was concerning I was crying when he was saying something so simple. Throughout the visit, I felt that my questions and experiences were met with skepticism rather than curiosity. Rather than feeling like a partner in my care, I felt judged and, at times, gaslit over my past mental struggles, which I take seriously. The interaction became so uncomfortable that I chose to end the appointment early as I began to cry, saying that this was not the right fit. His response was, “yeah, you clearly need to get your mental health in order before you are ready to see me.” I said nothing more and continued to leave. I understand that physicians may have different clinical opinions, and I welcome honest conversations even when we disagree. My concern is not that Dr. Modlo recommended lifestyle changes, but that I did not feel listened to or treated with respect. Patients seeking specialty care, especially after waiting months for an appointment, deserve to feel heard and to have their concerns explored thoughtfully. Unfortunately, that was not my experience.

Two years ago, I was at the end of my rope when it came to my health. All my doctors (yes, multiple) agreed I was very sick but couldn't figure out what was wrong. Since being under the care of Dr. Modlo, I've made a full 180. He, through the guise of functional medicine, was able to find what was wrong by looking in the areas other doctors never thought to look. He came up with a thorough treatment plan, walked me through it step- by -step and has helped me be able to become not only human again, but able to go back to work. I cannot recommend him enough. First rate care from a first rate, compassionate, wise, and knowledgeable doctor.

Terrible besides manor. He was very condescending and rude. He made an unprofessional and inappropriate comment about my job and I work for a Fortune 500 company. He downplayed my mental health diagnosis. Functional medicine is a service in my eyes and patients should be treated with compassion and respect regardless of level of care. Disappointing coming from the renowned Cleveland Clinic. I would not recommend to anyone.

I have been seeing Dr. Modlo for about 3 years. I have tried to get use to his foul demeanor and just can't. He is condescending. He is sometimes rude. Not sure if it's because I am less than him as a woman or just not as good as he is. He does not hear what I say. He can treat an illness but he is not able not willing to help with my overall health.

Dr. Modlo always takes his time with me & answers all the questions I have on my list. I would (& have) highly recommend him to anyone searching for a doctor. You have found THE best there is if you schedule an appointment with him!

Took some time to see the doctor. However, when visit started asked deep questions. Insight into disease process was eye opening.

Dr. Modulo takes his time and does not rush through appointment. Listens to how you feel. One of the best in the area. I would definitely recommend him.

Was able to sit down and have a conversation. Asked numerous times of concerns or questions. Broke down the issues so I could understand them. Will return.
