Dr. Erin Marie Mclain, MD

My intial experience with Dr. McClain was very positive. She sat and listened to my concerns. She help to address them in a way that I was comfortable with and followed up really well with me via messages. However, my second experience wasn't so pleasant. It was almost like I was seeing a different doctor. I had came in with one major complaint of extreme fatigue and one minor of having trouble loosing weight. Unlike my last visit, she had a nurse transcribe this whole visit. First, she asked if it was just the feeling of being a mom or if it was a symptom from the major complaint on my last visit. Then she kept insisting that it was my weight that was the trouble. That was the reason for my fatigue. (Fatigue as in sleeping 12+ hours a day and still needing more.) She asked about my exercise habits. I explained I tried for a month going to the gym consistently but I needed a several hour long nap afterwards to feel like I could function for the rest of the day. I can't obviously take… a three hour nap when I have a two year old at home. (That two year old was currently with me at the appt.) She didn't even really focus on my eating habits, what I did or did not eat, what I ate in a day, if I kept a journal or suggest that I do so, etc. She said she would have blood drawn and look at the test results. I had asked for a few blood specific blood tests (along with the whole metabolic panel she was already doing) to rule out if it was anything to do with my thyroid. She seemed to me incredibly hesitant to order the tests I had asked for; Only ever tested for two of the thyroid test saying she relied on the TSH to be accurate enough. She suggested for me to see a nutritonal therapist and gave a pamphlet to reach out to one. I was told to wait out in the lobby to be called for the lab. Well, an hour went by and the clinic was starting to close. One of the staff at the desk asked me what I was waiting for (seeing that my daughter and I were the last two patients left in the waiting room). She had me go back to the lab and talk to them. Whether it was the doctor or the nurse, someone had forgotten in their haste to hand the orders over to the lab. Seeing that both Dr. McClain and the nurse had left for the day by then, the lab technician had to find the orders in the computer. I was at the end of my patience by the end of this visit. Dr. McClain had a short, generalized apology for the confusion. Somehow all my labs came back normal too. Which was so confusing! I knew it couldn't be right. I ended up seeing another doctor two weeks later and was told I was vitamin D deficient along with noticing two other results that were out of clinic values in my labs. This was just my experience. Like I said, I had a really good experience the first time but the second time was just atrocious. I'm not sure I'll be back for a third.
