Interventional Radiology; Radiology Dr. Ernest J. Ring is a leader in the field of interventional radiology. His primary clinical and research interest has been the treatment of liver disease and the adaptation of interventional radiology procedures to the biliary tract and portal vein. Ring, who served as chief medical officer of UCSF Medical Center from 2004 to 2008, is a past president of the Society of Interventional Radiology and a recipient of the society's gold medal award in 2001. From 1992 to 1998, he was a member of the Board of Chancellors of the American College of Radiology (ACR) and served as chairman the ACR Interventional Radiology Commission. Ring earned a medical degree at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit and was a resident in radiology and a fellow in angiography and interventional radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He has been a professor of radiology at UCSF since 1982 and vice chair of the Department of Radiology at UCSF since 1994. He was associate dean of UCSF School of Medicine, responsible for programs at UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion from 1997 to 2001 and chief of radiology at San Francisco General Hospital from 2001 to 2004.
