Dr. Esen Karamursel Akpek, MD

Toxic emotionally. She should be restricted to surgery with minimal patient contact. She is maybe an excellent surgeon. But dealing with her is awful. Wished I had read reviews before. I assumed JH would have someone at the head of the department that was not only good technically but also had at least some interpersonal skills. Very rushed appointment, intentionally done not just bc she is busy but because she is toxic, arrogant and bereft of compassion. No eye contact. Ignores patient concerns. Talks down to them. What a shame such a person exits at JH (as smth other than a surgeon), and is the head of the department. This means future doctors will model their behavior on here. This behavior impacts quality of care, patient outcomes, etc.

Dr. Akpek has been a life saver on several occasions. She is a world renowned cornea specialist. She was there for me after complications from brain surgery and I'm certain that she saved my vision. She is also very kind and compassionate. She is just amazing!!

As some writers have stated before, the doctor seems to the point and brief. She comes across as rude at times. Hard to clearly understand the issue and the solutions described for a non-medical person.

Helped me enormously with dryness due to Thyroid eye disease. She is very skillful and extremely intelligent. Also she's a very highly respected professional in the opthamology field and I am lucky to be under her care

Dr. Akpek has performed two cornea transplants and two cataract surgeries on me. She has been my doctor for over 14 years. Her bedside manner was weak when I first met her, but once she gets to know you through your questions or laughter she is GREAT! You must ask her questions if you are not certain. I wouldn't want any other doctor. Between her and Dr. Stark (several years ago) they are the BEST and very NICE!!!

She had no empathy towards me, and didn't care about listening to my complaints or comments. I agree she can be skilled, but I think that physicians at the minimal should have empathy and compassion. I felt NONE of this from her.

Worse doctor, ever: Rude to pt and staff; uncontrolled anger is clear; e.g. does not acknowledge pt in room; does not greet; dismissively cuts you off when you try to explain any discomfort or even why you are there. Grabs your head to place for examination with force and anger (be quiet! she screams). Tilts your head for drops roughly and without telling you what she is putting on. Poor her resident doctor. The way she treated her too in front of me. This doctor looks and acts positively insane. And her diagnosis was off. How can Hopkins promote such a lunatic? A shame.

Dr Apkek did cataract surgery on my only eye. It was complicated because of a previous vitrectomy for an epiretinal membrane. She did an excellent job and helped restore my eyesight . I am very grateful to her . Dr Mark A. Ayers

She is an asset to the Wilmer Eye Institute, could not find a better doctor.

I have no question about Dr. Akpek's impressive qualifications. I accept but cannot comment on her technical skills, having not experienced them. Her staff is very good and attentive. I have a 20 year old implant and recently have suffered a rapid decline in vision. The implant is no longer functioning as it should. Dr Akpek refused to operate to replace the cornea. She expressed her reasons. However, she devoted the rest of the visit to presenting me to a very hard sell in favor of the new contact lenses that Johns Hopkins has designed. The lens is absolutely not appropriate to my needs. Dr. Akpek had no interest beyond this option in helping e find a solution or explaining the visual decline. In short, instead of a medical consultation, I was given what seemed to me like a sales pitch.
