Dr. Eugene Merle Stoelk, MD

There is so many things that he did wrong that has traumatized me. Looking back I should have left sooner, but he had our babies (embryos) and I had never done IVF before and he would tell us that everything we were going through was normal. I should have ran. I did not know it wasn’t normal and was made to believe by Dr. Stoelk himself, that it was and that he had dealt with many women like me, according to him. I finally went to another clinic after multiple unsuccessful transfers with him. I later found out that the tools he was using on me during our transfers were only to be used in surgical settings when patients are under anesthesia. Transfers should only take about 10 mins or so, I would be on his chair for well over an hour, with blood leaking out of me and him blaming me and saying my cervixs are tough, using these tools to try to cut and open my cervix’s. The last time he did it to me, I thought he had perforated my bowels, him trying to shove these instruments inside of… me to open my canal to get embryos in, sweat dripping down his face and me screaming out in pain. I won’t go much more into details on that because it’s so hard for me to relive. He would then lie to us and say it was a successful transfer and then pray with us. He did this to me on multiple occasions and the last time it was so bad, a few days later a clot the size of my hand cane out of me. I was in so much pain... i of course immediately called him and he told me once again it was normal and that I could come in next day. So I did and when I went in he did ultrasound and said everything was normal and there was nothing he saw in ultrasound. I was still in so much pain a few days later, I finally decided to get a 2nd opinion. I was told by the doctor at urgent care that I had a large hematoma on my cervixs and he was very alarmed by the size and asked me what had happened. I explained to him and he advised me to find a new Fertility Doctor. He said it was not normal and was very concerned. I of course then was very confused and upset and I went back to Dr. Stoelk for another follow up and at this time he said that he thinks I have endometriosis. Long story short he wanted me to go under the knife with him. After this I never went back to him, except to get my remaining babies. Dr. Stoelk had tried to diagnose me with fibroids, endometriosis, scaring off the cervixs, among many other terrible experiences with him. I went to 4 other doctors in Portland, 2 of which are other fertility clinics and they found no such things. Thank God I never went under the knife with him. I took my babies to another Ivf clinic and I was so afraid to do the transfer after what Dr. Stoelk has put me through, and it was like night and day. I didn’t even feel a thing and there were no surgical tools and it was done in a matter of minutes. I couldn’t believe it! I was floored. I’m so grateful to my new clinic, they have been so good to us and have really helped us start to heal from what Dr. Stoelk has put us through. We ended up pregnant with our first transfer at our new clinic. I just worry about other women and the things he might have told them that was normal. I lose sleep thinking of the 5 babies of ours that he didn’t even give a chance to. He lied to us and made me go through the worst pain in my life... and tried to blame me and my body. He is sick and because of him I’m am dealing with a PTSD. I cannot believe the pain and trauma I withstood... looking back, we will do anything for our chances to have a baby. I feel like if I stayed, mine could have cost me my life or permanently damaged for life.

Iâ??ve been a patient of Dr Stoelk for 10 months and unfortunately â?? I am not able to recommend him or his office. He is a very nice person and has very good bedside manners; however, he is not very diligent in his approach to treatment, which ultimately wastes peopleâ??s time and money. Iâ??ve been having monthly Clomid cycles, ultrasounds and trigger shots for 6 months and every time he would say â?? everything looks good, letâ??s keep our fingers crossed. And every cycle Iâ??d be back to his office, again. After 5 months of this he started pushing endometriosis on me and suggesting an explorative surgery, even though I had no symptoms whatsoever. Finally, I asked him to do an IUI and thatâ??s when he finally discovered that my partnerâ??s sperm count is extremely low. Duh! During our initial consultation we told Dr Stoelk that my partner is on testosterone shots. And this is basically a big no-no during TTC efforts. Dr Stoelk mentioned that this typically lowers sperm count,… but he never told us to stop the shots and he never during the 10 months of treatment asked my partner to do the semen analysis. And here we are â?? 10 months and $2,580 later â?? starting from scratch. I am so grateful to God that Dr. Stoelk didnâ??t talk me into unnecessary laparoscopic surgery that he was pushing pretty hard. We are stopping the shots and of course - switching the doctor. Not checking the sperm count after knowing that a male partner is doing testosterone replacement therapy is unacceptable. I am very disappointed in Dr Stoelk.

Dr. Stoelk helped us to have a beautiful baby girl. He was courteous and professional and definitely the most caring doctor we've ever worked with. He took the time to listen to our entire story, and personally called to check up on us. We feel very blessed to have been referred to him.

He was brisk at times, however he is a great doctor who knows what he is doing. After the implantation of eggs for invitro he prayed with us that the procedure was a success. We now have a daugher

We began our initial consultation with Gene Stoelk by sharing with him that a minimalist approach was inline with our values, and that IVF was not even in consideration. We are particularly opposed to anything involving drugs or invasive, long-term interventions because it is not in line with our values. We wanted to know if IUI was a viable option for our situation (low sperm count, maternal age of 38 but no other factors) and what was involved with that treatment, so we could make an informed decision. Stoelk did collect data about our health conditions, and then started his "7 reasons for infertility" talk followed by options. Despite all evidence to the contrary, much of the conversation focused on material age and poor egg quality - not poor sperm quality. While he believed IUI (he calls it insemination) without drugs was an option for us ($330/cycle), "he preferred" that I embrace the much more invasive gonadotropin + IUI option ($2500 + $330/cycle). When he continued to… describe the therapy as requiring daily shots and bloodwork every 2-3 days, I rejected it as not inline with OUR VALUES and therefore not something we'd consider. His response: "You quit too easy. You're not a quitter are you? Many women have done much more than this to have a baby." (For the record, I am a successful female entrepreneur, so hardly a quitter.)I can only presume his comments were designed to bully me into a more expensive, more lucrative treatment option. His behavior was unprofessional, offensive, and completely out of line.

Dr. Stoelk is soooo patient, attentive and awesome. He personally called me back with my results, wrote up my treatment schedules, answered my questions, and never made me feel like I was wasting his time. He does all the treatment coordination, and is involved in every aspect of your care. I think he may have spoiled me for regular doctors...I'll be going back for my next baby.

He is very friendly - a nice guy. He knows a lot about infertility and has helped many to get pregnant. However, when my husband I are were going through invitro procedures he overstimulated my ovaries causing me to produce way too many eggs. I got so sick that I almost died. It was a devastating experience for me and my family and I would therefore never recommend that anyone see him for IVF. Ever.

Dr. Stoelk is a great physician and surgeon. I had a laparoscopy and he video taped it and spoke directly to me during the procedure. It was amazing to see what endometriosis looked like and how he took care of it. I feel much better.

Dr. Stoelk is WONDERFUL! He is professional, caring and will work with you from start to finish. The only 'con' is that he has a little troll "working" in his office. Ask to speak with Melodi or Cheryl and your appointments will be kept and your experiences will go well. If you deal with the troll, you'll have insults hurled at you and, if you're really lucky, she'll take your blood from you and perhaps find a vein on the fourth try. The troll works on Saturday mornings... steer clear of Saturday AM appointments if possible.

Dr. Stoelk is without a doubt the best doctor I have ever been to, there probably isn't many as good and kind as he is.
