Dr. Eva King Wang, MD

Please let me start off by saying that I have nothing personally against Dr. Wang and that I do not feel that she is a bad person. I am writing this review to simply let others know about our experience so those who wish to can take our experiences into account while making decisions for their family. I urge people to make their own choices, though. I will try to give a thorough accounting of our time in the office without violating our son's privacy. Last week, I took our son to Dr. Wang for an initial appointment. The first thing that I thought was strange is that there were absolutely no children's toys, books, magazines or anything that would tell people that this is a children's practice- which it is. This was not a big deal for our family but for some kids, having child-friendly items make them feel more at ease when visiting such a facility. After waiting nearly 40 minutes to be taken back to see the doctor, we realized that no other clients were anywhere in the… facility. I have no idea why we were made to wait so long. There were no apologies or explanations from the staff either. However, the tech that took our son's vitals was nice enough but she was quite sick and probably should not have been at work (at least not in a medical setting). We eventually went back to Dr. Wang and I did find it strange that she did not greet us at all. Our son has to wear medical gear for his special need and she stared at him like he was some sort of circus oddity. Maybe it was simply curiosity but I did not find it appropriate. Before the tech even left, I told the doctor about our son's medical needs and how he needed the shades to be drawn and the lights dimmed (which I was assured was possible when I made the appointment). The doctor was hesitant to make these basic (yet absolutely necessary) accommodations. (Before I go too far into our experiences, I wanted to also point out that the doctor's office was very cramped and cluttered. She also had stacks of books, papers and other supplies everywhere. There was also a very hot portable heating unit by her desk and I found that odd being that the clinic only works with kids. This place is not child-friendly in my opinion. Our child does not need to be entertained and will sit when he is supposed to but many kids have needs that are such that they cannot sit still. Many kids require room and freedom to move and explore.) When we eventually were settled and got to talking, the doctor was surfing the internet. I don't know what she was doing but she did not look up at us much and looked distracted. I was giving her some background on our child and the doctor then decided that she wanted to look up his medical condition on the internet even though I was explaining it to her and she had this information ahead of time. It was nice that she wanted to be informed but this was not the time to do research and that wasn't even what we were in her clinic to discuss. In any event, the doctor had to regularly consult her DSM for basic knowledge of which laymen would even have a solid grasp. She seemed terribly inexperienced in her specialty but I don't see how that could be the case since she said that she has been in practice for many years and she is likely in her 60s (possibly older). I found it terribly distasteful that she kept dismissing well-established diagnoses as being non-existent. For example, she said that there is no such thing as Oppositional Defiant Disorder (not that our child was diagnosed with that), that all kids have elements of this "disorder" and that they will all eventually outgrow it. This is an insult to all families struggling with the reality of ODD and the assertion is not based in sound practices or a working knowledge of mental health services. She kept questioning why anyone would "want" a child with special needs and regularly referred to my husband and I as saints. I wasn't there to be canonized. I wanted help for our child. We are not new parents and have cared for kids of a wide variety of needs. This is not our first rodeo (so to speak) and I felt that I had more of a grasp on the doctor's specialty than does she. I don't say any of this to be mean but rather to explain how strange this whole visit was. Another thing that was bizarre to me was that the doctor said that she does not feel comfortable caring for kids that have significant medical needs and could possibly have mental health concerns as well. She said that she has no way of knowing how the conditions could play against each other and that she would not be able to prescribe any medications (if needed) because she would have no way of knowing about drug interactions. I'm sorry but isn't this part of what you study in medical school and part of what you are supposed to do as a doctor? She could consult literature, talk to drug manufacturers, speak with other doctors or do a million other things to find out what she needs to know on this topic. Dr. Wang did not seem willing to do what it would take to properly fulfill her role as a mental health professional or a doctor in general. The doctor refused to work with our child based solely (according to her) on the fact that he has more than one need. She told me to just keep calling other doctors if we felt he needed help or to just call 911 if he ever experienced a problem! While there are valid reasons to call 911, the emergency room is not a substitute for proper psychiatric care. I left horribly disappointed in our experiences and with a distrust in the doctor's abilities. It was also upsetting that we had to wait almost two months for an appointment and wasted so much time.
