Dr. Kofi Wurapa is a highly skilled physician known for both his clinical competence and deep compassion for others. Born to parents from Ghana, West Africa, he was raised in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he developed a strong work ethic and commitment to service. After graduating from high school, Dr. Wurapa enlisted in the United States Army and later attended Lebanon Valley College in Pennsylvania. He went on to earn his medical degree from the Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey.
Dr. Wurapa is residency-trained and board-certified in Family Medicine as well as Preventive and Occupational Medicine. He also holds a Master of Public Health and a Master’s degree in Tropical Medicine. During his distinguished 23-year Army career, he served as a Flight Surgeon with the 101st Airborne Division for three years and later as a Battalion Surgeon with the 3rd Special Forces Group and the 95th Civil Affairs Brigade at Fort Bragg for ten years, completing four deployments to …Afghanistan. In 2010, he was assigned to Kenya as Director of the Global Emerging Infections Surveillance program, where he spent the final seven years of his military career supporting multiple countries in combating infectious disease outbreaks and strengthening public health systems.
Following his retirement from military service, Dr. Wurapa continued his dedication to patient care, working as a clinician with MedStar, Kaiser Permanente, and Patient First. From January 2022 through December 2023, he earned a Master’s degree in Project Management from the University of Maryland. During this time, he also served as an Adjunct Professor at Bowie State University, where he taught Anatomy and Physiology.
Dr. Wurapa values family deeply. His wife is an orthopedic nurse, and his son serves as a Lieutenant in the United States Air Force, specializing in cybersecurity. He is also the proud father of two daughters, ages 10 and 12. A former high school and college soccer player, Dr. Wurapa retired from the sport after a parachute injury in 2003 but remains active through road marching and roller-skating with his daughters. He lives in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and attends the Church of the Redeemer. Looking ahead, he hopes to one day serve in Africa with Doctors Without Borders.
Today, Dr. Wurapa brings his extensive experience, leadership, and compassion to Primary Coastal Care, where he serves as Medical Director.
