Summary
Fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) is an established imaging technique widely used to differentiate between malignant and benign lesions based on the increased metabolic activity of most tumor cells. FDG-uptake is not a tumor specific process and multiple inflammatory diseases have been reported to give a positive signal.
At present, literature on the evaluation of sarcoidosis using FDG PET has been mostly anecdotal. FDG-PET has been evaluated in patients with sarcoidosis. It has been showed that FDG uptake is increased in areas of ongoing inflammation and it has been suggested that FDG-PET may be of significant clinical use in the assessment and management of sarcoidosis. However, only two small series of patients have been evaluated to present.
It has been also suggested that the degree of active ongoing inflammation may be a predictor for response to therapy. However, currently there are no diagnostic tools to determine the degree of …inflammatory activity except for surgical lung biopsy.
