Dr. Farzan Mahmood, MD

I saw Dr Mahmood this morning. I won’t be returning. I can say location, staff and office are great. Unfortunately Dr Mahmood is lacking in bedside manner. I was surprise to get an appointment with a specialist in under a week and now I understand. He seemed upset when I didn’t know the first name of my neurologist. Frankly I never thought to ask any doctor their first name. All in all I’ll pass on this doctor.

I began seeing Dr. Mahmood because the local rheumatologist through Aurora put us on a two year waiting list to be seen (I'm pretty sure it was because of the insurance we had). Dr. Mahmood's office got me in to see him for the first time within a week -- I actually think it was the next day! Dr. Mahmood is very quiet and reserved, but he is thorough. He listens carefully and spends an adequate amount of time with me. I saw him because of chronic pain. He has diagnosed me and is treating me for psoriatic arthritis based primarily on family history, though there is some evidence of it on lab tests. He is honest when I see him and he tells me some of the pain I have is not caused by psoriatic arthritis, but by fibromyalgia and plantar fasciitis. He is not one to over-medicate or just throw any med my way just to quell my complaints of pain. He is trying to help me find other solutions that coordinate with my other medical problems, even going so far as to contact my other… specialists before changing a med or prescribing a med that works in conjunction or would interact with another medication. I would recommend Dr. Mahmood to anyone needing to see a rheumatologist in SE WI! Others have said he doesn't care...but he is just a very quiet doctor who is listening and taking into account my whole health picture.

I was diagnosed in January of this year. Been 10 months of Methotrexate. Dr.Mahmood told me yesterday that my pain isn't from RA but could be a nerve problem. The doctor really thought the pain in my knuckles shouldn't be there cause there's no swelling. Nor the pain in my feet. Dr. Mahmood doesn't talk to me and he doesn't seem to care. I told the doctor my hair was thinning! Yikes! I have long hair. Doctor just nodded his head when i asked if thinning hair is a side affect from MTX. I broke down in tears as this is frustrating enough having this RA crap but going to a doctor who doesn't care is the worst. I want to get well and have been very proactive. I'll be looking for a different Rheumatologist. If you don't mind a doctor with no expression or compassion Dr. Mahmood is definitely a cold person.

Granted, mine was an unusual case. During a knee replacement, my knee was biopsied and found to be consistant with RA. Dr. Mahmood did more tests with also pointed to RA without being definite. Given all this, he wanted to put me on methotrexate even though I told him I was in the wine business. He said that I could have one drink a month. I went to a different doctor.
