Dr. Fernando Sergio Velayos, MD

I met with Dr Velayos while having a flare of IBD. After describing everything to the intern, Dr Velayos came in and asked the same questions. He refused to run a blood test to see if my medicine was being rejected by my body due to insurance costs (even after I said I would pay out of pocket), offered limited solutions, and when asked what new medication he recommended, he suggested a medicine that had already been tried and failed. Though I took the time to ensure he had my full history in his chart ahead of time, he showed that he did not read it, nor did he show care to understand my history or what "wellness" means to me. Also, note that UCSF has a strict no-switch rule within their specialty clinics, so if you are barred from switching to a different IBD doctor there.

Dr Velayos is a very kind and competent doctor. He really cares about his patients. I have ulcerative colitis and was very ill when I first went to see him. He was able to help me avoid surgery and achieve complete remission! I highly recommend Dr Velayos!

Went to Dr. Velayos once and he seemed nice, however follow up with him was excruciating. His office staff is not very attentive and did not alert me to the fact that he was out of town for a week when I asked for paperwork filled out by him several days after sending it too him... It took more than a week and a half to get him to fill out a one page paper with 5 questions on it.

Velayos is a really kind, friendly doctor. Unfortunately, he has absolutely no patient dedication. He could not accurately answer questions about my colonoscopy minutes after it was performed. He tried to prescribe me medication, and could not explain to me why I needed it. 2 other doctors have since told me they see no reason why I should be on it, or why he would even recommend it. He barely answers any questions, and refuses to spend any time explaining anything to you, he just wants to throw medication at you and dismiss you. Definitely do not recommend!!
