We saw Dr fike for a g tube placement for my daughter who is 6 months old. The surgery itself was okay so far, but my issue is that the expectations for the surgery were not set, on pre-op I was told That there as a possiblity that my daughter could be discharged same day. However post surgery I was told the exact opposite. The nurse told me it was a practice to observe patients for a day or 2. After the surgery my daughter was experiencing leaks which the nurse told us was not unusual.. but it freaked us out since we were not made aware of these situations prior to surgery. This is just one example and I know this is a relatively small proceedure for a surgeon, but families come with lot of physical and emotional stress and there is a lot of fear of unknown! And I feel that proper education can mitigate some of the unwanted fear and help cope better after the surgery.. if the surgeons dont have Time to go over details, having a written disclosure may be helpful and a nurse can go… over them!! This is just a suggestion. And again this is not just my experience but I hear a lot of parents discuss these inconsistencies in terms of what they were told to expect before and the reality after surgery, not just for this doctor but in general.. it's just a thought, as little as this may seem, it does play a major role in improving the overall patient experience and excellence in care delivery
