Dr. Frederick William Houts, MD

Dr. Houts put my daughter on 1200 mgs of lithium as he guessed she had bi-polar. When I reached out to him and tried to explain that ever since he prescribed lithium, my daughter was paranoid, aggressive and suicidal. I pleaded with him to lower the dosage due to my concerns. Reluctantly, he lowered her dose to 1050. He then commented, "When are you going to trust me?" Guessing the dosage was still too high, given my daughter's behavior, we lowered it to 900 mgs. When I reached out to ask if he would be willing to taper her off of lithium, he recommended adding another anti-psychotic (she was already on Clozapine) as well as Lamictal. He then commented that I needed him to take the lead. I asked him to explain his plan for my daughter and the reasoning behind it. He did not respond. That evening, I had to take my daughter to the emergency room. They took blood tests and determined she had lithium toxicity and immediately stopped the medication. Dr. Houts didn't respond to my email… regarding his plan for my daughter until the next day. Most likely after the hospital contacted him and explained what happened. I would not recommend Dr. Houts as he seldom reviewed my daughter's lab results prior to our meetings with him and always seemed distracted when we did meet. In addition, he clearly doesn't listen to his patients.
