Dr. Frieda Marie Hulka, MD

My Mom went in for emergency surgery, to have part of her intestine taken out by Dr. Hulka; but in doing so Dr. Hulka also sewed up part of her kidney tube!!! Which was not discovered until 5 months late by another doctor! S My Mom has been bed bound and unable to get out of bed on her own for the last 5 months! When we confronted Dr. Hulka about her sewing up my Moms kidney tube, she denied it. I would NOT RECOMMEND her.

Family member ended up in her care did not leave hospital alive. Aggressive and unnecessary treatment causing our loved one pain and suffering. Unbelievable and unbearable. The worst care I ever witnessed at Renown Regional ICU.

Took my 2 year old to her. She was very kind & attentive to both us, parents, and to my daughter. Everyone in the office was really nice. I wish this doctor wasn't just a surgeon!

My son was taken to Renown due to "failure to thrive" which is essentially the inability to feed without assistance. After a week with no diagnosis the doctors in the NICU told us that we could not leave with the NG tube and that we would be financially liable for the entire hospital stay unless we agreed to a g-tube and fundoplication (sp?). We agreed under duress and went ahead with the g-tube. Dr. Hulka performed the g-tube and fundoplication in 2011. We immediately saw post-op problems. My son could not eat normally for months after the operation. We took my son to UCSF where a scan showed that the fundoplication was herniated and there was necrotic tissue. The reversal done at UCSF saved my son's life. I can't say more as we are pursuing legal action.

I had a Gall Bladder that was going real bad. Dr Hulka diagnosed the problem and had me in the operating room in three days. She performed the surgery and I was in the recovery room within 30 minutes... fantastic after care...

My 4 month old son recently got the G-tube and fundoplication surgery done by Dr. Hulka and we were very pleased with her bedside manner and the results. She took the time to answer all our questions before surgery, in the immediate recovery period, and now. The recovery time was 4 days in the hospital and another 3-4 rough days at home. Now he's doing excellent - he's gained weight very well, he doesn't spit up constantly (although he can spit up or vomit if there is enough pressure, so we don't have to worry that he won't be able to get rid of food if he needs to), and he seems to be a healthier and happier baby. I would highly recommend Dr. Hulka in general and for this specific procedure.

Dr. Hulka is not a board certified pediatric surgeon, and you should take infants elsewhere. Out of Reno, if necessary. My daughter required a G-tube soon after her birth due to inability to take adequate oral feedings. Dr. Hulka required that she ALSO have a fundoplication surgery to prevent aspiration. We consented because, after many weeks in the NICU, we wanted our daughter home and Renown would not release her without a g-tube. Problem: There was no testing to determine that my daughter actually needed the fundoplication surgery, which she did not. It was simply required with the g-tube. Second probelem: Majority of fundoplications today are performed via laparoscopy, which greatly reduces pain and recovery time. Dr. Hulka did her via "open" method,presumably because she lacks the skill to perform laparoscopic surgery. This kept my daughter in the NICU another week, greatly stressing all of us as well as being extremely expensive. Third problem: The fundoplication surgery was… botched and my daughter ended up with a dangerous complication - paraesophageal hiatal hernia (the fundoplication had entirely come undone). The repair surgery for this was performed laparoscopically in Chicago by a top pediatric surgeon, who also stated that the practice of routinely requiring a fundoplication surgery with a g-tube placement (absent any sign or symptom of reflux) had ended well over a decade ago. Dr. Hulka is simply behind the times, and putting infants through a complex, unnecessary surgery with a very high rate of severe adverse outcomes. My daughter suffered years of dysphagia and two follow up surgeries for nothing(My daughter's third surgery was because her esophagus stopped passing food temporarily and she had to have a blockage removed. Her gastroenterologist said this is sometimes seen following fundoplications). It's been over 3 years since she saw Dr. Hulka, and I am still angry at myself for not taking my daughter home AMA (against medical advice) and taking her to San Francisco for her g-tube placement. By the way, that was botched by Dr. Hulka as well. It's a simple enough procedure, but Dr. Hulka placed her feeding tube in the wrong spot so that it rubs up against her ribs. Take your baby elsewhere. Please. Dr. Hulka, it's time to retire.
