Gabriela completed an accelerated program at Simmons College in Boston, MA. She received a BS in Exercise Science with a minor in psychology and earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy with Distinction in 2013. After graduation, Gabriela moved to Richmond, VA where she completed a two-year residency program through the Institute of Physical Art. In 2015, she sat for the rigorous Functional Manual Therapy ® certification exam, passing with honors. After completing CFMT, Gabriela began taking pelvic floor classes through Herman and Wallace and expanded her treatment to male and female patients with pelvic pain, pain with sexual intercourse, colorectal dysfunction, post-partum, and urinary and fecal incontinence. In 2018, Gabriela passed the rigorous pelvic health certification exam through the American Physical Therapy Association.
In 2017, Gabriela and her husband, Matthew Van Sickle, opened Functional Physical …Therapy, LLC to provide one-on-one, individualized care for those with musculoskeletal, neurological, and pelvic floor disorders. Together, Matthew and Gabriela apply their advanced knowledge and techniques to specialize in treating patients with complex conditions who have not recovered with traditional treatment or physical therapy.

Dr. Gabriela Van Sickle is a wonderfully gifted pelvic floor physical therapist. She has had a profound positive impact on my life beyond just the in-office treatment sessions. Not only has she resolved almost all of the issues related to years of trying to power through pelvic pain and dysfunction, but her focus on accountability has made me develop skills and knowledge to help myself manage and prevent future issues. The work extends beyond sessions into homework which for me have become habits that I will continue long beyond direct treatment. Pelvic floor therapy is more than just medical care, it is an investment in oneself. While her skills are incredibly broad, in particular Dr. Gaby is able to quickly identify sources of pain and perform therapy that provides long-lasting permanent relief. That ability greatly reduces the number of sessions required to achieve healing. She always explains what she is doing and why, and how it supports our long-term goals. Her caring,… compassion, and ability to discuss any topic related to the pelvic therapy being done, i.e. her bedside manner, is integral to her practice. She also has a great sense of humor which is critical during pelvic floor PT which at times can be rather intimidating and otherwise awkward. My work with Dr. Gaby has relieved me of not just prior urinary pain, but almost all pain in my lower body. I have seen significant improvements in my balance and I am much more limber than I was at the start of treatment, both of which have much broader life impacts. The only regret that I have was not starting therapy with her sooner.
