Dr. Gail Ellen Sowa, MD

I was frantic when I went to see Dr. Sowa because my previous gynocologist said I had cancer. Dr. Sowa saw me within two weeks and took me right on time; I didn't even wait a minute in the waiting room, or in the patient room. She was Very thorough and explained everything she was doing. I found her to be very cautious, gentle and thorough.

When I first found out I was pregnant I was soo excited! It was my first child and I was 35 at the time. My husband I went to our first appointment and it was horrible. Dr. Sowa never said congrats on having a baby or maybe how special this time was. She informed me I was high risk and went straight into EVERYTHING that could go wrong and all the risk factors. when she walked out of her office I looked at my husband and burst into tears. She had ZERO compassion or even seemed to care. One of the happiest moments of our life turned into a memory of fear and sadness. she made me feel like it was my fault for having kids so late. Who does that? Every appointment after that had LONG waits sometimes about an hour behind schedule and she was always short and rude. Horrible bedside manner.

Absolute worst experience that I’ve ever had with a doctor (and I’m 54 years old). I’ve never been compelled to write a letter of complaint against any of my doctors, but you can be assured that I will be contacting the higher-ups at Scripps about this woman!

6 years tomorrow I had a surgery from Gail. She was not a good Dr. I lost my right ovary because of her. I went to her through numerous appointments and told her if pain in my right side of my stomach. She didn’t care about me. In fact she told me it was in my head. The pain got so bad that I went to urgent care and they found a very large cyst in my right ovary. It was too late. I had to do surgery. Gail Sowa showed up to my surgery and said I had to leave my vacation time to be here today. I had trouble getting pregnant after this surgery. I lost two children and she is still a Dr. She has no repercussions for what she did to me. She has no idea how much she effected my life to this day.

I went to see Dr. Sowa with my first pregnancy. I was having a miscarriage. She was very cold and uncaring. Sent me home and told me it would all be over in a few days. I called repeatedly over the next few days because things were not proceeding as advised. After a week of severe cramping and heavy bleeding I was encouraged by friends to seek a second opinion. Within minutes of my visit to my brand new ob/gyn she informed me that I needed to go in for an emergency D&C as I was in risk of sepsis due to everything not passing properly. I had to call my husband to come get my from the hospital as I was rushed me over there. Had I not switched doctors I could have died. It was bad enough that I lost a baby. That dr and office are horrible. I never went back and would never recommend her to anyone. Horrible bed side manner and ZERO compassion! If I could rate her zero stars I would. Never returned my multiple frantic phone calls. This happened over 8 years ago and it still pains me to this… day. Her medical license should be revoked. Scripps should be ashamed to have her on their team. I’ve complained about her to other scripps drs who seem to have heard about how unsympathetic she is. it disgusts me to know that she’s still an OB/GYN. I should’ve spoke up more then, but it was too difficult to talk about.

dr sowa was 30 minutes late to appointment. i had her scheduled for preconception counseling as i am planning on becoming pregnant. she neglected to tell me to stop taking 2 prescription medications that are teratogenic. at the end of the appointment i asked her about the medications and she said "good thing you brought those up, i forgot to tell you those medications cause birth defects and you should stop taking them". !!!! is she "forgets" such simple things and these medications were clearly listed on my forms i cant trust her to handle complex patients if she forgets simple things like telling a patient to stop taking teratogenic medications before getting pregnant. what an idiot!!!!

I will never recommend her, she shows no care, emphaty, spends no time with ( always in a hurry to get out of the room). Didn't make me feel cared for. No compassion. I was young then when I had her but never forgot my experience. She waited darn too long to deliver my baby because of that big damage was done to her and our family. She is n will not ve the Dr.

I don't understand where are all the complaints are coming from but I want to advise all that have made negative remarks about Dr. Sowa that you are way off base. She saved my life and my daughter's life. I was pregnant in 1996. I had preterm labor with my first child, a girl. She was responsive and quick to make sure that I was taken care of during this ordeal. I had immediate medical attention and she monitored my progress on a weekly basis until the birth of my daughter. During delivery, my daughter was not going throught my birth canal. My daughter was is distress, and so was I. The nurse was not monitoring me very well and Dr. Sowa walked into the room, threw on the lights, and told the nurse that she had been monitoring my vitals and the babies vitals during the stages of my labor. She was very professional, excused the nurse, explained to me that there was complications and rushed me to emergency surgery. It is the doctors like Dr. Sowa that you should be drawn to. Next time… you complain about bedside manner and darn she didn't talk about the roses I planted yesterday, think long and hard. Do I want a doctor that will be there to save my life and my unborn childs life, or do I want a doctor to tell my that coffee grounds are great for acidic plants. Your life is in her hands, she is fantastic. Shame on you.
